Week in Review 12/21-12/28

Week in Review 12/21-12/28

The boys basketball had a nail bitter on Tuesday night against Cardinal Spellman. The boys were down 20 going into the 4th quarter, but fought hard to gain a lead but unfortunately lost it in the last few seconds. The Bishops did not let this loss effect the way they played on Sunday. The boys played a great game against Norwood and got their first win!

Cheer has put together some great routines and used them Sunday as they cheered on our boys basketball team to victory.

Girls basketball has has a successful week by adding 2 games to the win column. They decidedly beat Spellman and even got into the triple digits against Providence Classical. The girls are getting ready to take on the number 1 team in the state, their neighbor, Braintree on Monday night.

Boys Hockey had a busy week with 4 games. The ended up falling short to Chelmsford and Bridgewater Raynham. They then went on to tie Westford Academy. The bishops were able to get their first win of the season this week against Bishop Fenwick. The varsity record is 1-4-1.

Girls Hockey had a light week this week with only one game. The Lady Bishops played hard against Bishop Guertin and won 6-0. The girls are off to a great start this year and have not suffered a loss. They will hopefully be going into the New Year undefeated. The girls are 5-0 to start the season and head to the Quincy Holiday tournament.

This week Track and Field sent a few athletes to the Holiday Classic. Congratulations to Ceira, Mia, Jackie and Ruth who went and represented Archies at the invitational. All four girls achieved a personal best in their events! The rest of the team was still practicing hard down at the track enjoying this warmer weather.

Swim had a week full of practice. Their next dual meet is not until January 2 so they were working hard to be fully prepared to take on Matignon and St. Joseph.

Week in review 12/14

Week 12/14 in Review

Girls basketball had a tough start to the season. The came up short in their home opener against Bishop Feehan last Sunday. One the bight side senior captain Alana Gilmer scored her 1,000th point! The girls started off with a difficult game, but were able to regroup and came out strong to get the win against Matignon.

Boys basketball has only had one game so far and unfortunately lost their season opener. They hit the road to take on Cathedral on Friday but even though playing hard all game they were not able to to come out with the win.

The Lady Bishops are making a statement on the ice this season! They have come out with a bang and are starting their season off with a 4-0 record. Their victories were over Ursuline, Latin Academy, Melrose, and Saint Mary’s. It was the first time in program history that the bishops have beaten St. Mary’s. Great work ladies!

Boys Hockey is off to a rough start this season. The boys took on Arlington Catholic and Springfield Cathedral and lost both. These two teams are among the best teams that the bishops will face this year. The bishops are still skating hard and looking forward to getting their first win.

Track and Field has had two meets and performed well in both but did not come out on top. They fell short to St. Mary’s and Lowell Catholic/Cathedral. The team is a young team and has a lot of young legs that are making great improvement each week! Keep working hard through the cold weather down at the track!

Swimming might have lost their first meet against Cardinal Spellman on Wednesday but there were some great performances. Sophomore Vy Doan finished with 3 first places and has already qualified for the State Meet in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly. Colleen O’Callaghan was also able to come out with a first place in the 100 Backstroke.

Winter Preseason blog

Welcome to the 2014-15 Winter season. We have one of the largest group of student athletes playing winter sports this year with nearly 300 students participating. We have added a middle school boys basketball team and have brought back our freshman girls basketball program. There are some familiar faces with our coaching staff but have also brought in some new ones as well. We are looking forward to the season.

Here is our preseason blog.

Girls Basketball
Archbishop Williams Girls’ varsity basketball team already has their eyes on that State Championship. Getting knocked out by St. Mary's at the Garden in the State-Semifinals has really put a lot spark in them this year. The girls have made it very clear they never want that feeling of having the season end because of two points again. The team graduated four seniors last year but the Bishops have players ready to come together and work hard in hopes of reaching their goal of a State Championship. Even Coach Bancroft said, "I’m expecting now that everyone is back and healthy that this is a state caliber team and our expectations are that we will win it" The girls kick off their season on the 14th of December vs. Bishop Feehan where Senior Captain, Alana Gilmer is expected to reach the 1000 point club, needing 6 points to accomplish this prestigious goal.

Boys BasketballThe AWHS Boys Basketball team is ready to improve. They may have only won 3 games in the 2013-2014 season but that is not stopping them. The boys are ready to fight hard for each win. As Coach Holden said, "Each year, my first goal is to continue to improve as a team throughout the whole season. My second goal is to get 11 wins." With these eleven the boy’s would finish with a winning season. The boys’ basketball program is rapidly growing, as they have added a middle school team. Many would say that the team is going through a rebuilding year, but these boys don't think so. The Bishops graduated 5 last year so are ready to have some new members step up and lead the team to a winning season. The Bishops plan on making their presence known in the CCL. The boys kick off their season on December 19th vs. Cathedral.

Girls Hockey The Bishops played very well last year. They fought hard through their tough schedule and ended up with a winning record of 13-4-4. There are 6 spots that are looking to be filled this year, including the big spot in the net. This year the Lady Bishops had 24 girls tryout, which is the most ever in their history. Senior Captain Keira Dwyer commented "We have a lot of freshman who are doing really good adjusting to high school hockey." It is great to see these freshman are fitting right in with the team and making it better. With this many girls the future for the AWHS Girls Hockey program is looking very bright. The Girls open season on the road on the 13th of December and home opener is December 14th at 4:45.

Boys Hockey
The boys’ hockey team preparing to be CCL champs and another berth in the prestigious MIAA Super 8 hockey tournament.  The boys won the CCL in 2013 and the boys are striving to take their title back. With a record of 12-3-7 last season, they are looking to compete and match or improve upon that. After graduating a 12 seniors, whom played a big part in their winning season, there are many new faces stepping onto the ice. With three strong teams: freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity, the Bishops have a lot of support and back-up. With this much talent the Bishops are expected to have another stellar season, with hopes of reaching the Super 8.

Track and Field
Track and Field had a great showing on the first day of practices. With around 60 athletes, this is the largest turn out in the programs history. With the number that they have, they are expecting to have many athletes in able to compete in each event. This will allow the AWHS track and field team to have ample chances to place and get many points at meets. The Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center will be filled with some very talented athletes as they compete during these winter track meets. Their first meet is Saturday the 13th of December at the RLC at 12PM.

Swimming
Swim comes off a good 2013-14 campaign. Senior Victoria Butterfield easily summed up the expectations for the upcoming season for the Archbishop William's swim team, "We hope to have a fun season with a lot of fast swimming." Under the direction of their new coach, Coach Joe Lally, the team is looking to improve from what they accomplished last year. The team as whole is looking to have more qualifiers for the CCL Championships at the end of the season. Swimming opens their season on 17th of December vs. Cardinal Spellman, 3:30 at Massasoit.

Cheer
Cheer is looking to compete in a very tough CCL winter cheer season, as they prepare for their first invitational in January and then the leagues in February. The ultimate goal is obviously to end up in States which is familiar territory for the girls having won the fall season CCL championship and a great showing at Regionals and an at large bid to States.

Good luck to all our Winter sports teams as they compete this season. Please come out and support the programs at all levels.

Week in Review

Football got off the bus after a long ride to Seekonk and were ready to play. The boys came out strong and came out on top 36-17. They were down 17-0 but came back with 36 unanswered points. Great work boys! This was the teams last game before their big night before Thanksgiving Game against Spellman on Wednesday at 6PM at Cardinal Spellman.

Boys Soccer is still going strong in their tournament run. The boys beat Cohasset 2-1 today in Taunton, which earned them the D4 South Sectional title. The boys will head to Lynn on at 7PM to take on Manchester Essex in state semi finals. Good luck boys!

Congratulations to Shannon Kelley who was the only to represent AWHS at the State Meet. She came in 46th out of 183, which is amazing for a freshman! Congrats on a great season.

Our cheerleaders had a great effort at Regional's on Sunday but did not earn a berth to States. They may still get an bid after review of state wide scores.

11/2 - 11/8 Week in Review

Week in review 11/2-11/8

This weeks story -  The boys soccer team had a great year with a 10-3-3 regular season earning the Bishops the #4 seed in the D4 MIAA South Sectional Tournament. After a bye in the first round the boys found themselves down 1-0 at half to the # 5 seed Sturgis east. The Bishops 2nd half pressure paid off as the young offense found the back of the net 4 times to advance to  in the quarterfinal round. The Bishops advanced to the semifinals where they will meet #1 seed Holbrook at 1:30pm on Tuesday at Canton HS.

Coach Mitchell said this of his team as the prepare for Tuesdays match up "Our young guys are maturing quickly. Our best defense against the high scoring Holbrook offence will be to possess and dictate the tempo" Coach Mitchell added "I don't see this as a 1-0 game. We need to take advantage of the opportunities created and do a good job in the attacking third". We wish Coach Mitchell and his team the best of luck with their match vs. Holbrook.
Coach Mitchell was also honored this weekend by the Eastern Massachusetts Soccer Coaches Association and was selected the Division 4 South coach of the year. Congratulations to Coach Mitchell on his selection.

Football fell short this weekend at the hands of Old Rochester. The boys gave it their all despite the freezing weather but unfortunately came up a little short. The boys also honored their seniors, as it was their last home game. Congratulations and thank you to all the seniors for all their hard work for the program!

With their first round MIAA D4 South win over Falmouth Academy on Tuesday they moved on to face the #1 seed East Bridgewater. The girls soccer played a solid 100 minutes of soccer on Saturday night, which included 2 overtimes.  The #8 Bishops played extremely well and after regulation and two 10 minute over-times the score remained tied at 1-1. It came down to penalty kicks and sadly the Bishops came up short. Overall it was a great season and the entire team should be proud.

Cross Country ran well at the Massachusetts State Class Meet on Saturday. The major highlight of the day was Shannon Kelley's 7th place finish in the Division 6 race which qualified her for the All-State meet next week. Shannon is the first Freshman, boy or girl, in the school's history to qualify for the All-State Cross Country Meet. This is quite an accomplishment. Great job Shannon and good luck at States on Saturday!

Volleyball was unfortunately knocked out of the state tournament on Tuesday. Case HS came out on top but the Lady Bishops played hard and gave it their all! Congratulations on a great season ladies!

Cheer put on a stellar performance on Sunday at the CCL Championships, held at Austin Prep. The girls came out on top with the CCL title for the 11th time! Their league title has qualified them to move onto regional's! Fantastic job ladies! We wish the best this coming weekend!

10/20-10/26 week in review

10/20-10/26 in review

This Weeks Story: It was a great week all around for the girls soccer team. The week started off on the right foot (pun intended) when they traveled over to face their rival Cardinal Spellman. It was Spellman's senior night so they were all hyped and ready to play. Cardinal Spellman was not ready for what they were about to face. They underestimated the Lady Bishops. The Bishops came out right away and played a solid game. When the ref. blew the whistle for the final time the scoreboard read 0-0. It was only the second time in a decade that the girls soccer team has tied Spellman! They continued doing great things when they traveled to Independence Manor and helped out. They were at the assistant living home for a few hours after school on Thursday. The team helped the elderly as they made crafts. Junior Emily Perriello summed it up best when she said "I very much enjoyed serving my community by working at independence manor. Helping create Christmas decorations with the ladies that live there was both enjoyable and rewarding and I look forward to doing it again soon". It is great to see our teams out doing community service together! The ladies topped off the week with a big 8-0 win over Innovation Academy on Saturday. Congratulations on a great week ladies! Senior night will be held on Monday as the girls face Fontbonne in their final regular season game of the season and then they get ready for tournament play.

The football team suffered a tough loss on Friday. The boys played hard through all four quarters and gave it their all but unfortunately things did not end up too well for the Bishops. They lost 22-0 to Bishop Fenwick, but not due to a lack of effort. The team non-playoff scheduled is shaping up to look like; Norwell (H), Old Rochester (H) and Seekonk (A). The dates and times will be announced in the very near future. They will also play Spellman on November 26th, at 6PM at Cardinal Spellman HS.

The Cross Country team put on a great performance at the CCL Championship meet. The girls had one of their best finishes in years and all came in the top 20. The boys also did a great job and came in fourth! Congratulations to Shannon, Jackie, Kelly, and Brendan F., who are automatically CCL all-stars by placing in the top 13 at this meet.

Volleyball had a strong week by gaining 2 wins. They beat Bishop Fenwick and Matignon. Unfortunately they ran into a tough Fontbonne team on Friday night and suffered the only loss of the week. Keep up the good work ladies as they wrap up the regular season and head to the tournament.

The boys soccer team had a huge CCL win over Cardinal Spellman on Monday night. They played hard and were not going to let Spellman come in and beat them on their own turf. Despite some bus issues, the boys journeyed up to Innovation Academy on Saturday and got another win 6-0. The boys now wait for their first opponent announcement for the MIAA tournament.

The Golf team had a great day on Monday. The team of Cullen Lyne, Matt McCaughey, Matt Walbridge, Pat Wall, Max Zahka, and Katy Meehan played well and came in 2nd place at the MIAA tournament. As the runner it earns them a spot in the state finals! They head to Georgetown on Monday for the state finals. Good luck team!

Cheer sounded great on AMP 103 radio on Monday night! The girls are still preparing for the CCL Championship and are in hopes of getting a regional bid on Nov. 9th. Good luck!

10/13 - 10/19 Week in review

10/13 - 10/19 Week in review

Football played a nail-bitter. The boys fought hard against Austin Prep in double overtime. They made the right plays at the right time and came out on top 38-36. After the game senior captain Ryan Earle had a few words to sum up the crazy game, "I guess we got ourselves in a bad situation letting them (Austin Prep) climb back into the game, but when we needed to make a play in overtime so many different kids came up clutch for us and I'm really proud of what we did." Ryan McMahon and Joe Early came up big and were there to catch the ball to get the final points to win the game. Great job boys!

Volleyball honored their seniors last Friday night during their last home game. They were able to top off the night with a great win over Milton. Congratulations Erin M, Erin K, Molly and Olivia! The girls also picked up another win against St. Mary’s earlier in the week. With the wins the week the girls will now head to the tournament!

Cross Country was very successful at the Catholic Memorial Invitational at Franklin Park. Congratulations to Shannon Kelley who had an outstanding race and won the Freshman Race. The team prepares for the CCL Championship meet later this week. God Luck!

Boys Soccer had a strong week, as they qualified for tournament. They got their much needed point with a tie over St. Mary’s. They later tied Bishop Fenwick as they work to improve their record in hopes for getting a better seed for tournament. The boys finished the week with a loss to Braintree.

Girls Soccer qualified for tournament for the first time in three years. Their hard fought win over St. Mary’s secured them a spot in the MIAA State Tournament. The girls suffered a tough loss in a torrential downpour to Bishop Fenwick on Thursday. Thank you to all the teachers who came out to support the team!

Golf headed to the league championship on Friday at Gannon Country Club in Lynn. The team of Cullen Lyne, Matt McCaughey, Matt Walbridge,  Pat Wall, Max Zahka, and Katy Meehan had a strong showing but in the end came up a little short. The team will head to their MIAA tournament match on Monday morning.
Cheer had a great time at 103.3 AMP, you will be able to listen to the girls as they take over Slater’s show on Monday night at 9PM. They also did a great job cheering on the football team to their victory!
This fall has proved to be quite successful for every program; with boys soccer, girls soccer, volleyball, and golf all qualifying for the state tournament already. Cross Country competes for at leagues on Thursday and then on to states, Cheer competes for the CCL and a regional bid on the 9th of November and football continues to strive for a playoff berth and with a win on Friday over Bishop Fenwick they have a great shot.

10/6 - 10/12 Week in review

10/6 - 10/12 Week in review

Football fought a hard fight on Friday night. They came up a little short to Arlington Catholic, losing 20-38. The boys are putting their loss behind them and are getting ready to take on Austin Prep this upcoming Friday night at home, 7PM.

Volleyball had a successful week with winning 2 and only losing 1. They lost to Arlington Catholic but got back on the winning track with victories over Austin Prep and Holbrook! The ladies have a great record of 8-5 so far this season! Keep up the good work ladies as they get ready to face St. Mary's and Milton.

Cross country had a big win over Matignon, Austin Prep, and St. Joseph's Prep this past week at Pond Meadow Park. Both the girls and boys team beat all three teams. The team has taken this long weekend to rest up for Lowell Catholic and Cardinal Spellman this week.

Boys soccer had winning week! They beat Arlington Catholic and Austin Prep. This improves the boys record to 7-2-1. This means the boys are only one point away from tournament, a tie or a win would secure their spot in tournament. Lets hope they get it done this week with games with; St. Mary's, Bishop Fenwick and Braintree.

Girls soccer gained 3 more points this past week by beating Arlington Catholic and tying Austin Prep. The girls are in the same boat as the boys, needing only 1 point to qualify for tournament. The upcoming Bishop Fenwick game is for Breast Cancer Awareness, so come out Thursday at 3:30 to the field and donate to the box at the concession stand! The girls will also honor their favorite teacher by asking them to attend the game.

Cheer had a big week with winning the 103.3 amp radio Football Challenge. The girls ended up with the most votes and will be taking over Slater's show at a later date. Congrats girls!

Golf had a major league win against Bishop Fenwick. They also beat Spellman earlier in the week but lost a though one to them just a few days later. The highlight for the golf team this week was their outstanding win against St. Mary's. The wins this week also qualifies them for tournament play. Great job team, and keep up the great work!

9/29 - 10/5 Week in Review

Football had a game for the books on Friday! The boys crushed St. Mary’s 33-6. This was the first time the Bishops have defeated the Spartans since 2007. “The team practiced hard all week and were well prepared for a solid St Mary's team that was 3-0 going into the game. The win was a complete team effort” Said Coach K when asked about the game. This was their first league win and getting ready for Arlington Catholic in hopes of getting another league win on Friday.

Volleyball packed the gym for their Dig Pink game as they took down Spellman. The girls took the win 3 matches to 1. The team played hard for a great cause to benefit the Susan G. Koman foundation. They also sponsored a delicious bake sale. The lady bishops also beat Matignon. They are looking to take down Arlington Catholic, Austin Prep and Holbrook this week.

Cross Country is getting ready for their first home meet this week after having a very busy week before. Half the team competed at the Bay State invitational while the other half was there cheering on their teammates. They ran for the first time at Franklin Park and many were able to achieve personal bests. Shannon Kelley came in strong at 9th place.

Boys Soccer had a week free of games but were still training hard. They are ready than ever to hit the road take on Arlington Catholic. The boys will host Austin Prep on Wednesday.

Girls Soccer had a light week and only played one game. Even with the rough weather conditions the girls played through the cold rain and beat Matignon 3-0. The ladies are only 4 points away from qualifying for tournament and hope to get these much needed points this week. They host Arlington Catholic and travel to Austin Prep this week.

Cheer traveled up to Lynn and were right there to cheer the Football team onto victory. Don’t forget to mark your calendars on November 9th, for this is their big CCL meet.

Golf had a major victory against Arlington Catholic this week! AC has only had 3 losses in the past five years but our AWHS golf team came out on top and gave AC them one. Great Job!

9/22 - 9/28 Week in Review

Another big week in Bishops sports. Please follow our blog, twitter and gobishops.com for your AWHS Bishop news! A big thanks to our Athletic Intern Jess Rega for her work with the blog.

Football put on a stellar show last Friday for all the fans who came out for the big homecoming game. They came out ready to play and defeated Medford 18-7. They are already preparing to hit the road and take on St. Mary’s on Friday, October 3 at 7pm. Come out and support the team as they travel up to Lynn! Shot out to Ryan Earle on his selection as Mr. AWHS.

Volleyball had a very busy week as they took on St. Mary’s, Bishop Fenwick, and Holbrook. They came out with the win over St. Mary’s and Holbrook, but came up short against Bishop Fenwick even though they fought hard. They will be facing Matignon and Spellman this week. Good luck ladies! Shout out to Molly Plunkett on her selection as Mrs. AWHS.

Cross Country had a tough race at their first invitational at Ocean State. Despite the heat and dust Shannon Kelley and Brendan Flynn fought hard and performed well for the team. They will all be running hard this week to get ready for the CCL Freshman/Sophomore meet and the Baystate Invitational Meet.

The Boys soccer team had a strong week this week, improving their record to 5-2-1. They had a big win against Bishop Fenwick and another great win over Hampden. They did suffer a tough loss on the road against Spellman. The boys are getting a well-deserved rest this week as their next game is not until Monday 10/6 against AC. The boys need 5 points to make tournament (2 for a win and 1 for a tie) in their final 8 games.

Girls soccer had a rocky week as they lost their past two games. They played hard against Bishop Fenwick and Spellman but fell short in both games. The girls are getting ready to take on Matignon (10/1 at 3:30pm) game is home please come support your lady bishops as they began their second half of the season.  At the half way point they are 5-3 and need 6 points to make tournament (2 for a win and 1 for a tie) in their final 8 games.

Cheer had a great performance at our first home game last Friday. They continue to work hard to get ready for their first competition which is the CCL meet on November 9th.

Golf had a good week with a win over Bishop Fenwick and a very close loss with perennial CCL Champs Arlington Catholic. Golfs record is 4-3 and have matches with Cardinal Spellman and a second chance at AC this week.

9/15 - 9/21 Week in review

We will try to do a week in review as often as possible.

The Bishops fall season continues with many successes.

The Football team headed to Millis on Friday and played a great game although they ended up on the losing end of the score. Many improvements were seen from week one. The team will prepare for our homecoming game vs. Medford this Friday at 6PM. Mr. and Mrs. AWHS will be crowned at half time and our home coming dance will start at the conclusion of the game. Tickets are $15 for students, this will get you into the game and dance.

Volleyball had two wins and a loss his week. Bringing their record to 2-3 on the season. Their wins were over Austin Prep and Cardinal Spellman. A nice way to head into the weekend with the win over Spellman. Big week coming up with St. Marys, Bishop Fenwick and Holbrook on the docket...looking to continue their winning ways from Friday.

Cross Country boys won their first meet this past week beating Marian. The girls had some great times but unfortunately did not have enough girls to compete for team score. They are headed to Arlington Catholic and the Ocean State Race this week.

Boys Soccer played a couple of great games this past week. With a win over CCL rival Austin Prep and a non league win over South Shore Christian Academy. They did suffer a road loss to St. Marys 1-0. They are a solid 3-1-1. Boys play Bishop Fenwick, Cardinal Spellman and Hamden this week.

Girls Soccer beat Austin Prep 4-0 and lost to St. Marys 1-0 this past week. The girls are off to a great season with a 5-1 start a third of the way into their season. They have a big week coming up with games against CCL rivals Bishop Fenwick and Cardinal Spellman. The girls have outscored their opponents 20-1 in their first five games.

Cheer continues to prepare for their upcoming competitions and are doing a fantastic job at our football games. Look for a great performance at half time on Friday our first home game!

Golf continues to do well with only two losses on the season. Record is 3-2. Big week coming up.

Captain/Leadership Council - Will meet on Friday during lunch block. All Captains are expected to attend during their lunch block. We will meet in Campus Ministry. Please bring your lunch with you.
