Spring Blog and Athletic Updates

Spring Season Blog
Track and Field may have had a slow start but, both the girls and boys teams, are steadily improving their records. All of their hard work over the past several weeks is starting to pay off. As each meet goes by many athletes are achieving personal records. Some athletes have already qualified for the Division 4 State Class meet. Congratulations to Jonathan Pierre, Jess Rega, Julia McRoberts, Ruth Labranche, Anand Panigraphy, and the 4x800 team of Shannon Kelley, Hannah Kelley, Paige Roche, and Jackie Shuttleworth. With only a few regular season meets left, we hope to see man more athletes qualify for states. The team has been working very hard and pushed each other. Both teams have a solid record of 3-3.

Boys Lacrosse is continuing to improve upon their winning record. With an outstanding record of 10-3 the boys are still giving it all as they look to better themselves in tournament standings. The team has a large number of upperclassman but, the younger players definitely play a major role on the team. The boys are a strong team in the CCL and are willing to do whatever it takes to make a far run in the State Tournament.  They boys only have a few more home games left so make a trip down to Memorial Field and watch the boys do what they do best!

Girls Lacrosse is having a very successful season so far. With a record of 11-5, the lady bishops have clinched a spot in the State Tournament. They have been working very hard together as a team on and off the field which is really showing in their record. The girls only have two regular season home games left before they start their journey into the tournament. Congratulations to Gen Grasso, Kelli O’Brien, Olivia Barry, Kiera Dwyer, Maggie Garvey, Aine Varden, Andrea Liddell, and Lily Delaney as they celebrated their senior night just the other night!

Softball is just a few games away from making the tournament. They are a fairly young team but are still making a strong impact on the CCL. The lady bishops are making a difference whether it is on the field or off. The team has given back to the community as they volunteered at a local softball clinic where they helped younger athletes improve upon their game. The girls still have a decent amount of games left to play due to the late start because of the snow. Good luck girls and keep working hard in hopes of making the tournament.

Tennis may not be winning many of their matches but that does not mean they aren’t working hard. The girls have been over at Presidents Club almost every day during the week practicing. They have captured three wins so far and still have a few matches left. Tennis does not have any seniors as they are a young team trying to rebuild. The underclassmen have definitely helped the team grow and have pushed the juniors to work that much harder. Keep up the hard work ladies!

Baseball may not be having the season that they hoped for but that is not stopping them. With a record of 3-7 they are still doing whatever it takes to make tournament. They are in a very tough league and playing some strong teams but are always willing to step up to the plate and take on the challenge. The team has had their ups and downs as they faced a few injuries. The team is hoping to be completely healthy soon so they can finish up the regular season strong with a few more wins.

Bishops Week in Review 2/10-2/16

Week in Review 2/10-2/16

Boys Basketball had a week to remember. The boys have qualified for the state tournament for the first time in 5 years! Even though they had a tough loss to St. Mary’s, the boys had a huge win over Coyle & Cassidy, which clinched their spot in tournament. Congratulations boys and good luck in your tournament run!

Girls Basketball had a stelar week wining both of their games. Losing to Bishop Feehan again was not an option for the girls on Wednesday night. The girls played a hard fought game that was close the whole time. The Lady Bishop then celebrated the last home game for the 5 seniors. They took on Austin Prep and gave the seniors a night to remember, by significantly beating them. Congratulations and thanks for all your work Molly, Alana, Jess, Jaylen and Tayler.

Boys Hockey celebrated their senior night this week against Arlington Catholic. Although they suffered a hard loss it was still a great night for the boys. A big thanks to Chris, Sean, Eric, Rob, Matt, and Colin for all your hard work and dedication to the program. Later in the week the boys took part in the Ferreira Classic down in Falmouth and had a great win over Duxbury!

Girls hockey may have started off the week with a loss to Arlington Catholic, but that didn’t stop them. The girls then went on to have a 7-0 win over Bishop Guertin just the next day. The girls finished the week by having their senior night on Saturdayagainst Fontbonne. Kiera, Emily, and Gen have always worked hard and played a great game on their special night earning them a tie with Fontbonne. Thanks for all your hard work ladies!

Swimming had two athletes participate at the Division 2 State Swimming Championship.  Senior Victoria Butterfield placed 20th in the 200 Freestyle and 28th in the 500 Freestyle. Sophomore Vy Doan placed 12th in the 100 Butterfly. Congratulations to both swimmers for an outstanding season of swimming!

Bishops - Week in Review 2/2 - 2/9

Week in Review 2/2-2/9

Boys Basketball is really making a change this year. With only three wins last year the team has already doubled that and the season is still not over. Everything started to change when the bishops only lost to their rival, Spellman, by three early in the season. Then just a few weeks later the boys played an outstanding game against St. Mary’s and gave them their only loss in the league. St. Mary’s is always a strong team in the CCL so it was a very big moment for the boys basketball program. As Coach Holden said, “We've played in some close games and have started to learn how to win, which is a huge step for our program.” The boys basketball program has seen a lot of new faces this year and have had some ups and downs but that is not stopping them from working hard at all.
Coach is very pleased with the way his team is growing. He even said, “The best thing about this season has been that every player, regardless of playing time, has really contributed to the success we have enjoyed.”  When you go to watch their games you even notice that every game they do not only depend on a certain five to start the game, or play during a close situation. The team is composed of hard working boys who can all step up to the plate. With only one week left in the regular season Coach Holden and his team are still focused on achieving their goals are hoping to do in their final games.

Girls Basketball faced a bitter defeat on Tuesday night. It was a close game against Bishop Fenwick the whole way. In the final seconds Bishop Fenwick hit a buzzer beater to won the game. Later in the week the girls came out ready to play against Arlington Catholic. When they met previously in the season it was a tight game, but not this time. The lady bishops held a large lead the whole game.

Boys Hockey got their second won of the season on Wednesday at home. They took on Barnstable and played three full periods of good hockey. Things did not go the same way on Saturday. Unfortunately they suffered a 5-1 defeat against St. Mary’s.

Girls Hockey had a huge week! After losing to Austin Prep earlier in the season by only 1 the girls were all fired up to take them on again. Their hard work paid off and defeated the Cougars 1-0. It was a big night for the lady bishops on Saturday, congrats!

Track and Field had their last meet of the season. The team played 7th at the Tri-County League Winter Championship Meet which is good considering they were one of the youngest teams in the league. Congratulations to the seniors and the captains Jackie, Erin and David to a great winter season!

Swimming placed sixth in the 15th Annual Catholic Central League Coed Swimming Championship at Lynn Voke Tech. Victoria Butterfield and Vy Doan really stood out among the bishops. Victoria placed 2nd in the 200 Freestyle and 4th in the 500 Freestyle. Victoria was named to the Catholic Central League All Star Team.Vy Doan placed second in the 100 Butterfly and third in the 50 Freestyle. Victoria and Vy were named to the Catholic Central League All Star Team.

Week in Review 1/18-1/25

Week in Review 1/18-1/25

Girls Basketball hit the road again and split games while down in New York. They beat Grand Street Campus but lost to Archbishop Molloy. It was a lighter week for the Lady Bishops, as they only had one game, which was on Friday night. They had a big win against Matignon.

Boys Basketball faced some tough competition this week and lost both their games. The Bishops took on Cathedral and Abington. The boys fought hard during these two non-league games. They are not going tot let these loses get in the way as they continue try and make the State Tournament.

Girls Hockey split this week. They started off the week with a loss to the always powerful Cougars of Austin Prep, 2-1. The defeat did not stop them as they took the ice on Wednesday and had a big win against St. Mary’s, 5-1. The girls third game of the week was rescheduled to a later date due to the weather on Saturday

Boys Hockey had a lot of practice time this week, as they only had one game. The Bishops hit the ice on Wednesday night and fought hard against St. Johns. Unfortunately they lost 3-0.

Track and Field came out in high spirits as the raced against Austin Prep. The team was a little short handed and out numbered but that did not stop them. Although they lost everyone showed a lot of effort and for many their hard work payed off. Congratulations to the 10 athletes that placed in their events:
GIRLS
Shot Put - 1st - Julia McRoberts; 2nd - Erin Keating; 3rd - Sarah Golden.
55 Meters - 2nd - Julia McRoberts; 3rd - Kate McCarthy
1000 Meters - 2nd - Jackie Shuttleworth
BOYS
1 Mile - 2nd - Stephen Lynch
600 Meters - 3rd - Patrick Earner
55 Meters - 2nd - Cameron Gregg; 3rd - Raymond Liriano

Swimming put on a great show on Tuesday afternoon against St. Mary’s. The meet went back and forth and was not settled until the last events. Even with Victoria Butterfield’s 4 first places and Ty Doan 4 first places the bishops fell short. The Bishops swam well once again against Austin Prep on Friday night. They may have been outnumbered and lost but that did not stop them. Some major highlights were:
  • Senior Tommy Liu won his first dual meet competition against a strong field in thee the 50 yard Freestyle
  • Senior Captain Victoria Butterfield won the 200 Freestyle and finished second in the 500 Freestyle while qualifying for the State Sectional Meet in both events in two weeks.
  • Sophomore Ty Doan won the 100 Fly and achieved a strong second in the 200 IM. Ty also qualifies for the State Meet!

Bishops Week in Review 1/4 - 1/11

Week in Review   1/4-1/11
This week we feature our AWHS Swim program.

The 2014/2015 swim team is ready to work hard and do what it takes to have a season to remember. Under the new leadership of Coach Lally, the team is already seeing many improvements. They might not be taking first place in each race but they are without a doubt the ones with the most effort and heart. The team is also led by senior captain Victoria Butterfield who is doing great things in and out of the pool. Sophomore Vy Doan is also stepping up and showing complete dedication. These two are always ready to race in any race that coach asks them to do.

In each meet of the season there have been, on an average, approximately ten athletes who have gone out and achieved a personal best. This is great accomplishment, as it shows how everyone’s hard work is paying off. It doesn't even matter what grade you are in, as Teddy Rossini has shown. He is the youngest member on the team as a seventh grader, but has gone out and finished second in the 50 free. It did not even bother him that there were seniors jumping off the platform right next to him. Victoria Butterfield and Vy Doan have also achieved greatness so far. To date these two have won each individual race they have done. They are supported by a team full of swimmers who are also striving for these great achievements. Another standout of the season is Colleen O’Callaghan. She has shaved off 20 seconds from her Individual Medley time. The hard work is really starting to pay off!

Coach Lally has perfectly summed up the great attitude of this swim team, "We are trying to instill a culture of hard work and dedication mixed with fun. Swimming is not an easy sport, where it takes a lot of dedication and time in order to improve. The Bishops are taking advantage of the two hours of pool time they have each week day and jump into that pool ready to work. Coach Lally is feels very fortunate to be working with such a dedicated team and is always looking forward to see who is going to improve at the next meet. Best of luck to the swim team in the rest of the season!

Boys basketball split this week beating Canton, but facing a hard defeat against Arlington Catholic. The boys were able to hold Arlington Catholic to a tie at half time but there shots were just falling in the second half. After the tough loss the bishops did not let this crush there spirits and went out to beat Canton by a solid 5 points.

Girls basketball had a challenging week. Coming out after a large win over Austin Prep the team headed to Arlington Catholic to play a tough game. Even though the lady bishops were down by a few at half time the rallied together and played like a team, resulting in an 18 point win. They then hit the road early morning to travel to New Jersey for the weekend. Despite a tough game just the night before the ladies beat Upper Christian Academy they took on Potters House, one of the best teams in the country, and gave them a fight. Unfortunately they lost, but got the competition they were looking for, in this non league matchup.

Boys hockey had a bit of a rough week. The boys hosted the strong Spartans of Saint Mary's and unfortunately ended up with a loss, 3-1. Three days later the bishops hit the road and headed up to take on Bishop Fenwick. The results were better, they tied the Crusaders 1-1.

Girls hockey had another spectacular week by adding two more games in the win column. The Lady Bishops defeated Shrewsbury and Latin Academy. The girls hockey team is really having a strong year and all their hard work in practice is really paying off. Keep up the good work ladies.

Track and field had a tough week with the bitter temperatures. They still worked extreme hard, each athlete striving towards a new personal best. The AWHS track team fell short to the much larger Arlington Catholic team earlier this week. Sarah M, Jackie S, Julia M all finished first in their events and the 4x400 relay team of Sarah M, Mia R, Jackie S, and Hannah K also finished first. David F was the only one from the boys side to get a first place.

Cheer has done some great updates to their cheer leading routine during the basketball games. The crowd and team seem to enjoy the effort.

Week in Review 12/29-1/4

Week in Review 12/29-1/4

Girls Basketball played, what many have said, The Massachusetts game of the year. It was #1 vs. #2 as the Bishops took on the Wamps of Braintree. It was a back and forth game, with both teams having their shining moments. Unfortunately when the final buzzer rang the Lady Bishops were just a few points short and lost to Braintree.

Boys Basketball had a great week as they added three games to the win column. The boys played together and very hard. They fought from behind and played solid defense, rarely letting any opponent run threw their defense. With such a great week the boys have reached a record of .500.

Girls Hockey had their first loss of the season to Arlington Catholic Saturday night. The ladies had a big week also having to face Hanover/Cohasset, Weymouth and Walpole. Theybeat Weymouth and Hanover/Cohasset. The girls fought hard against their out of league opponent, Walpole, and ended the game in a tie.

Boys Hockey had a light week, only having to take the ice once. They traveled up to Stoneham Arena to take on Austin Prep. The Bishops fought hard for three solid periods against the Cougars but with less than a minute left in the game AP put in the game winner.

Track and Field had their first win of the season against Marian at the Reggie Lewis Center. Their were eight first place finishes in total between the girls and boys team! The great work didn't stop there. The Freshman/Sophomore meet was also a strong one for the Bishops. Julia McRoberts placed 8th in the Shot Put and Anand Panigrahy also placed 8th in the Long Jump. There were 11 athletes who accomplished personal bests at this meet!

The swim team lost a tough one to Matignon/Mount Saint Joseph. Their were still some big performances; Senior Captain, Victoria Butterfield's three first place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay (butterfly), 200 Individual Medley and 100 Butterfly. Sophomore Colleen O’Callaghan and freshman Joe-Yee Yip finished first and second place in the 100 breaststroke. Seventh grader Teddy Rossini stepped up against his older competitors and finished second in the 50 Free.
