Girls Basketball
The Lady Bishops are on a roll as the mid-season point came and went, having won 6 games in a row. They are an impressive 7-0 on the road and 10-2 on the year (Currently ranked #13 in the state of MA!!). In their last game against St. Mary's High School, another stellar performance was put on by junior Asiah Dingle and senior Meg Donovan. Asiah led the team in scoring with 27 points and Meg had 11 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks. Mollie Manning continued her hard work on the defensive end and also chipped in with 8 rebounds. The girls have already qualified for the tournament, congratulations!!!!! Senior Meg Donovan said "this year is no different than the other years I've been on the team; we are a great team and we are going to be confident going into the playoffs."

The Lady Bishops return tonight in a HUGE matchup against the state’s #1 team, Bishop Feehan on the road. Feehan beat Archies by 13 in the first game of the season, but the girl’s are confident the result will be different this time around.

Boys Basketball

The boys’ basketball team started the season in tough fashion and now find themselves holding a record of 2-10 a little more than halfway through the year. However, what makes this team special is their will to keep working hard and signs are showing, going 2-3 in their last five games, including two very good wins at home v. Bishop Fenwick & Pembroke. As the season continues, playoff hopes are slim... BUT the future of the program is bright. The JV team is 8-2 and looks extremely strong. The freshman team has also had a strong season so far, holding a record of 7-5. I got a chance to talk to Coach Dolan about the season so far and he had this to say…  "This year is definitely a rebuilding year for us. Although we may not being lighting it up on the scoreboard, we are definitely growing our program with many great young players. Our Varsity players continue to play with high intensity and passion. That is a great model for our young kids to follow."

The Bishops square off against Baystate Academy tomorrow (1/28) in a day game. The boys will look to make it 3 wins in their last 6 games!

Swimming
Head coach Joe Lally when describing his victory over Cardinal Spellman… “The Bishops went Beast Mode!!” Beast Mode is one of the many terms that can be used when talking about the year our swim team is having. After 7 meets, the team sits at 6-1, one of the best starts in recent years. Senior captain Vy Doan is one of the many outstanding performers that have completed this roster. One of the leaders of the team, Doan continues to get better and better each week. In the last meet against East Boston (51-42 win!), Doan led the way with wins in a 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke, which helped qualify her for States in both events, as well as, breaking her own school record in the Breaststroke. Great job Vy! While it would be too long to name all the outstanding performers of the swim team, feel free to check the athletic website for a more in-depth look at the excellence being displayed by each and every member.
Swim concludes their regular season Saturday, February 4th at the CCL Championships (at Simmons College).
Track & Field
Another one of the many bright spots throughout the winter season here at AWHS has been our Track & Field program. Similar to swimming, our Track & Field team can be described in many events as going “Beast Mode”.  After beating Spellman 80-74, the Bishops faced a potential “trap” meet against Marian. Instead of falling into that trap, the Bishops responded behind strong leadership and talent, beating Marian 122 -18. The night started with two of our student-athletes completing their personal bests in incredible fashion (Stephen Lynch recording a 4:55.67 time in the 1 mile run & Julia McRoberts recording a shot put throw of 32’.25”) Julia is now ranked #1 and Stephen is now ranked #3 in the league in their respective events! That is amazing!
On top of all of that, we also wanted to recognize the Boys 4 x 200 Relay Team (Anand Panigraphy, Tyler Kelly, Brendan McClelland, and William Hua) who qualified for the State Class Meet and again broke their 2-day old school record (1:38.99). Phenomenal!
Check out more on the athletic website for a large list of our athletes who broke personal bests and continue to impress Coach Van Dorp on an everyday basis.

Girls Hockey
The girls’ hockey team has had a bit of a roller coaster ride throughout the season, standing at a record of 5-6 on the season. With 9 games remaining, the Lady Bishops must win at least half to find a spot in the playoffs. One constant in the first 11 games for the girls have been an inability to find the back of the net in losses. Of the six losses on the season, 5 out of the 6, the Lady Bishops have been held scoreless. However, in their five wins, they have scored an amazing 30 goals. As the girls continue to compete and battle for a playoff spot, they must find a consistency with scoring goals. Sophomore Mackenzie Heath leads the team with 6 goals on the season, while Junior Maggie Leonard is not far behind Heath, with 4 goals. Making the playoffs would be quite the feat for a young program... but they must find a way to deliver some goals if they want to get there.
The Lady Bishops square off twice in a row (Away & Home) against CCL competitor Arlington Catholic next week. Let’s go girls!
Boys Hockey
Similar to girls’ hockey, the Bishops find themselves right on the cusp of a playoff spot a little more than half-way through the season. After ten games, the boys’ hockey team stands at 4-3-3 on the season with 10 games left (two in the Falmouth tourney over Feb. vacation). Two things have really stuck out with this feisty and competitive squad… early game struggles and success on the road v. success at home. A constant so far this season for the boys has been early game struggles. You can never count this team out in games, but in order for them to land in the playoffs, the Bishops must get off to better starts. Also one thing to be found a bit surprising has been the team’s success on the road v. at home. On the road, the Bishops hold an undefeated record of 3-0-1. However at home, they stand at just 1-3-2 on the season. With hopefully more continued fan support, the Bishops will look to turn around their home record. The good news… 7 of the last 10 games are on the road.
Next up for the Bishops … Tonight (1/27) on the road against Bishop Fenwick and tomorrow night at St. John’s Prep (1/28). Good luck to the boys!
Cheer

The cheerleading team continues to get ready for their big competition in February. They have been practicing every week and Coach Durkin is confident the team will be ready to go by the next month. Since then, the girls have done an amazing job performing throughout our boys’ basketball games. Make sure to come check them out. Through their cheers and consecutive back flips, they certainly do make timeouts that much more entertaining!

Bishops Blog Winter Season - January 6th 2017

Bishops Sports Blog – January 6, 2017

Boys Basketball
The boys’ basketball team has had a difficult start to their season, going winless in their first four games. Behind newly-hired head coach, Jim Dolan, the Bishops have showed fight, grit, and a competitive nature, despite struggling to add a W to their record. They look to bounce back against Arlington Catholic tonight at home, which is the home opener (6:30 pm start.. come support the boys!). Senior captain Brian Keating has this to say about the season.. "We lost a lot of our scoring from last season so it has been a difficult start offensively for us. However, we have been working hard and guys have been stepping their game up. The offense will come, and despite some early season frustrations, we are confident that improvements will be made.”

Girls Basketball
The Lady Bishops have found a continued success to start their season. It can be very difficult to match such a successful season (Girls’ BBall made it all the way to the Garden last season), but the team has started off hot going 4-2, with their two losses coming against two VERY good programs, Bishop Feehan & Newton South. So what has been the reason behind their early season success? It could very well be the 57.8 points-per-game that the Lady Bishops have put up. It could also very well be the fact that the girls’ have only given up an average of 39 points per game defensively. The team will look to get to win #5 on the road tonight against Arlington Catholic (6:30 pm start).

Swimming
Over the Holiday break, the swim team won their first meet against Arlington Catholic on the road. They also competed in an invitation at Middleboro with Catholic Memorial and Dedham High School, which was some great competition for the boys & girls. The team has their first home meet tonight at Randolph High School, going against league competitor, Matignon. The meet is set to start at 6:30 p.m. Good luck to the boys & girls!

Winter Track & Field
What a start for the Track & Field program here at Archbishop Williams. In the first three meets, the Bishops have maintained an impressive undefeated record at 2-0-1, with their only tie coming against Austin Prep (very first meet of the season). Since that first meet, the Bishops have defeated St. Mary’s (103 to 43) and Cathedral/Lowell Catholic (95 to 46). In the last meet, there were six first place finishes by both the boys’ and the girls’, which goes to show how hard this team has worked in the first month of the season. More impressively, 20 different athletes in the program have already achieved personal best records. Feel free to go onto GoBishops and check out the list of “personal bests”. Coach Van Dorpe has worked very hard with this team, both on-the-track and off-the-track, and the 20 “personal bests” are a great testament to that hard work and effort put in by the head coach. The team travels to Bishop Fenwick next week (Tuesday, January 10) in what is going to be their toughest test to date.

Girls Hockey
“We will continue to improve our season as long as our effort is there. We’re a good team with a lot of heart.” Junior Hannah Bell, hit the nail on the head with this quote, and that effort and heart has shown as the Lady Bishops hockey team has won 2 straight games, improving their record to 4-3 on the season. Despite being very young, the girls’ have battled against some pretty good competition so far this season. They have been shutout in two of the seven games so far this season… the other five games? 27 goals! That’s an average of almost 4 goals a game, which is fantastic considering they haven’t scored in 2 out of 7 games. Goalie Allison Delmonte has been on a little streak of her own… 2 straight shutouts in net. The Lady Bishops host Arlington Catholic tomorrow (Saturday the 7th) at home (12:45 pm at Zapustas Arena).

Boys Hockey
The boys’ hockey program has had a roller coaster ride type of season so far. In the first five games, the team has notched a record of 2-2-1, with their only tie coming at home against Lowell Catholic. The two losses have come against Massachusetts powerhouses, Pope Francis and St. Marys, but the team has looked outstanding in both of their wins against Chelmsford and Westford Academy. If there is one thing that describes this boys’ team, it is feisty. More than half the games so far this season, the Bishops have gotten themselves into a hole to start the game. However, this “feisty” attitude, has allowed them to battle in games and mount comebacks that is exciting to watch. The fan support has been fantastic and we are looking forward to seeing what this team can continue to build as the season continues to shift into gear. The next game for the boys’ is tomorrow night, on the road, against Bishop Fenwick (6:00 p.m. start).

Cheerleading

The cheer team looks great this year after going to States last season, and we are looking forward to seeing them perform at our home boys’ basketball games! They don't have a competition until February so they have time to get ready and improve through practices. Coach Durkin has been working very hard with this group and achievements have already been accomplished in practice. Congratulations to senior, Marcella Natale, and seventh grader, Emily Martignetti, for completing their first back hand spring.
