Girls Hockey

Congrats to the girls’ hockey team who clinched a playoff berth in the MIAA Division-2 State Tournament. While the season was one similar to a rollercoaster at an amusement park, the girls’ stepped up when they needed to. Heading into their last four games of the regular season, playoff hopes were iffy. Faced with a 6-10 record, the Lady Bishops managed to win their last four games over the likes of Mount St. Joseph Academy, Stoneham, Fontbonne Academy, and Marshfield. Due to the late push, the team clinched the 26th seed and will square off against a very good Westwood team (16-4-2). The two teams scrimmaged in the pre-season with Westwood winning that by one goal.
In order for the girls to pull off the upset, they must continue putting pucks in the back of the net. In their last four games, the Lady Bishops scored 19 goals and only gave up 4 goals. The return of junior Hannah Bell has seemed to spark the team. Bell has 13 points in 13 games played. Mackenzie Heath still leads the team in goals with 13, but Chelsea Taxter is not far off with 10 goals on the season.
The first round begins tomorrow night (2/28) at 5:30 pm at the Canton Ice House (pictured above). Go support the girls in their quest for a first round upset and a state tournament title!

Girls Basketball
Girls’ basketball finished the regular season with a spectacular record of 16-4. However, the season ended on a note that Coach Mahoney and the girls would rather forget losing their last two games heading into the tournament. The injury bug and sickness came through like rapid fire and as a result, the team played their last couple of games with a limited bench. As the playoffs near, the Lady Bishops hope to get healthy at the right time.
The two loses to end the season dropped the Lady Bishops to a 5th seed in the Division-3 South bracket. Pictured above, the girls’ team drew a tough Bourne program that is 15-7 on the season, winning 6 out of their last 8 games. Bourne is lead by 6’3 Center, Emma Fenton. Fenton has created mismatches all year long inside, so the Lady Bishops will need a team effort from the likes of Mollie Manning, Monica Spain, and Jess Knight in order to contain the sophomore center. The last time these two teams met was indeed in the first round of the tournament last season, which resulted in a 76-32 victory for the Lady Bishops. Mahoney and the team will have their work cut out for them this time around.
Last year’s season ended in a tough loss to Bishop Fenwick at the TD Garden. What will this season bring? The girls’ are very confident, despite ending the year with two losses and know that if they can all get healthy in the near future, this will be a team that can make it back. If they can get by Bourne in round one, they will face an extremely tough matchup against either Coyle & Cassidy or Norwell. The team will look to rely on tough defense, clutch shooting, and Co-MVP of the CCL, Asiah Dingle running the point in order to get back to the Garden. The team is proven (wins over Bishop Feehan, Cathedral, Wellesley, etc.) and if they get hot at the right time, watch out! Good luck girls!
Boys Hockey
Unfortunately for the boys’ hockey team, they came up just short in qualifying for the Division-1 State Tournament. It came down to needing a point against a tough Hingham team, and the game ended 3-2 not in our favor. The Bishops ended the season 8-9-3 with big wins coming against the likes of Arlington Catholic, Reading, and Barnstable. With 7 seniors graduating, the boys’ hockey program will need big-time contributions from the underclassmen in order to get back into the tournament. With lots of talent coming up, the future is bright.
Despite finishing one game under .500 on the season, the boys’ battled in almost every game. Slow starts seemed to be an issue for most of the season, but you could never count this team out. Nick Glass finished the season with a team-high 12 goals and 22 points, followed closely by Ben Murphy’s 9 goals and 17 points.
As a team, the Bishops finished the season with 58 goals for and 53 goals against. Even though the season didn’t end the way the boys’ and coaches’ wanted, it was very exciting to watch them battle all year long. We wish the seniors the best of luck and look forward to the future of this program getting back in the tournament.
Boys Basketball
The boys’ basketball team had a rather tough and somewhat frustrating season. Finishing with a record of 4-16, it can be hard to pull out many “positives”. However, two things really stick out with this season. First, this veteran team (7 seniors) battled in many of their games all season long. One example of this happened just one week ago, when the Bishops went on the road to face a Cohasset team that finished with 15 wins. Finding themselves down 33-11 at half, things were not looking good at all. The team had more turnovers in the first half than they did points. BUT, like they did in a lot of their games this season, they battled back to make things interesting. In fact, so interesting that the Bishops found themselves down just 2 points with 25 seconds left and the ball in their hands! A few shot attempts later, the final horn rang and the final score read 56-54 Skippers.
Now what comes next for a team that won just 4 games? How about a JV team that went 14-4 against their competition and a freshman team that went 9-9 on the season? The 23 combined wins by both sub-varsity teams has Bishop Basketball fans buzzing. That mixed with a group of juniors led by James Dolan, Tom Veasey, and David Liddell looks promising. Can we expect another 4 win season? Highly doubtful… Next year should make for a good one.
To the 7 seniors graduating… Thanks for your hard work.. leadership... and mentality that defines what it is to be a Bishop. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Cheerleading
Cheer traveled to Central Catholic High School this past weekend to compete in the CCL’s. After spending weeks practicing, the cheer team came into the competition confident that they would be successful… and sure enough they were! The hard work that the girls’ have been putting in on a weekly basis showed. Cheer qualified for Regionals thanks to an outstanding performance!
On top of their performance that qualified them for Regionals, their performances during the Boys’ basketball games can not go unnoticed. The team amazed audience members and fans with their back flips and cheers during timeouts and periods.
Regionals will take place next Sunday (3/5) at noon. Be sure to go check out the girls’ as they hope to flip into a top finish! Good luck to Coach Durkin and the team.
Track & Field
It was an unfortunate ending of the season for the Track & Field, but it wasn’t due to team performance. Weather played a big part and we were stuck with some snow that unfortunately forced the League Championship Meet to be cancelled. Despite not having the meet, the track & field team finished the year with a second place finish in the league… the highest place since 1996 (5-1-1)!
Next up was the Division V State Class Meet. Nobody on the team finished in the top 3 in any race, but many of the members competing either broke previous school records or achieved personal bests. Some of the highlights included Anand Panigraphy finishing 5th in the long jump, Julia McRoberts who threw a personal best and finishing 9th in the Shot Put Final, and Ruth Labranche who also broke her own school record, finishing 12th, in the long jump. Feel free to check on the school athletic website under Track & Field for a complete listing of all the records broken and individual personal bests.
Congratulations on a record-setting season for the Track & Field team!
Swimming
It was a record-setting season for the Swim team in the winter. The co-ed team finished the year 6-2, as well as, finishing in 3rd place in the CCL Championships which were held at Simmons College. The meet had over 300 swimmers competing for league bragging rights, so it is extremely impressive that the Bishops finished in 3rd place! More impressively… the swimmers that represented the Bishops that day broke 6 school records!
The state meet occurred at Boston University and the Bishops most certainly made a splash. 8th grader, Nicole Miller, finished in 8th place in the 200 Free and 14th place in the 100 Backstroke at the Division-2 State Championship. What an incredible job by Nicole to cap off what has been a record-setting season for the 8th grader… yes 8th grade! Andrew Henault represented the Bishops in the 50 Freestyle, while Megan Miller, Colleen O’Callaghan, Nicole Miller, and Sarah McDermott represented the Bishops in the 200 Medley Relay. Both the group of girls and Andrew were the first to swim their respective race in more than 12 years for the Bishops.

The future looks bright for the Swim team, but it won’t be an easy task repeating what was a season to remember! Great job to Coach Lally and all the swimmers.
