AWHS Athletics Blog -- 2018 Fall Edition

AWHS Athletics Sports Blog – Fall 2018 Edition

By: Nolan Bosse & Monica Spain

Football

The 2018 football season is officially underway for the Bishops. Now three games into the season, The Bishops find themselves 1-2 under new head coach, Matt Reggiannini. The two losses have come against some very difficult competition (Stoneham & North Quincy), while their lone win came against Middleboro (Super Bowl Champs last season). The team has a lot of work to do in order to get back to .500, but senior captain, Ryan Bellew, is confident that the coaching staff will prepare them for this week’s bout against St. Bernard’s. “We are really working hard in practice and know results will eventually come. The coaches are pushing us to do our best all the time and we hope that with a good practice this week, we can pick up our second win on the season”

Despite falling to 1-2 on the season, there have been many bright spots after three games. Junior runningback, Nic Tardanico, leads the team in rushing with 251 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns. He also has found the end zone by using his arm as well, resulting in a 24-yard TD pass to Siveny Augustin. The senior receiver has an incredible 34.4 yards-per-catch average on the season. We hope to see another large crowd for Friday night’s non-league matchup against St. Bernards.

Cheerleading

The cheer team enters the 2018 season rather young, but fairly confident thanks to the hard work of returning coaches, Ali Fareri and Al Grasso. After losing some key seniors last year, the Cheerleading squad have found great leadership in a large number of underclassmen. They have been working very hard to prepare for their competition season that is right around the corner. In preparation for the competitions, the girls can be found almost every day of the week flipping around the gymnasium, as well as, conducting some fantastic routines and cheers during Friday Night football games.

Junior captain, Catie Cleary, had this to say about the team: “the morale of our team has changed so much this season already, were all so excited and ready for what’s ahead.” That excitement and hard work will be pivotal once competitions come upon us. The first competition for the girls will be on October 27th, as the Lady Bishops will compete at the Braintree Invitational.

Boys Soccer

The varsity Boys Soccer program currently finds themselves 2-2-2 on the 2018 season, despite having played some tough competition to start the year. After losing some key veteran players at the end of last season, the Bishops have had to rely on their younger talent, as well as, their newly appointed senior leaders. One thing that hasn’t changed throughout the program, is under the overall leadership of head coach Brian Mitchell, the Bishops battle to the point they are in every game. This has shown to be significant as after 6 games on the season, every game except one, has been decided by less than one goal.

When asked about the upcoming season at the beginning of the year, senior captain, Ryan Hanson, seemed to have high hopes for the Bishops: “Since we lost a lot of good talent, everyone is already doubting us. With a young and skilled roster, we’re looking to run on teams and make another push in the CCL.” The Bishops will look to get over .500 tomorrow night as they host a very good Bishop Fenwick team.

Girls Soccer

The varsity Girls Soccer team went into the 2018 season looking to quickly forget about a tough State Championship loss and begin their new journey at another title run. After losing many seniors from the 2017 season, the Lady Bishops were ready to bounce back with determination to finish what they started. Although they lost very talented players from the prior season, they have brought in some new talent to continue to be successful. Also, returning players are stepping up to work hard to make this season the best one yet! Senior captain Mackenzie Heath states, “Our determination and focus is showing in practice and in games. I am excited to continue this path with this incredible team throughout the rest of the season.”

The Lady Bishops currently sit 4-2-1 after 7 games. Despite two tough losses (Braintree & Spellman) and a tie last night to CCL foe, St. Marys, the girls continue to work together to complete their common goal with their positive attitudes. The Lady Bishops will look to get win #5 tomorrow night as they travel to take on Bishop Fenwick in a huge CCL showdown.

Volleyball

The Girls’ Volleyball Program have had a rather tough start to the 2018 season and while the results haven’t been what the girls want them to be, the Lady Bishops continue to improve every day. The team opened up their season with a tough schedule, losing on the road to a strong Milton team 3-0 and Arlington Catholic team 3-0. However, the girls have battled and competed against very strong opponents (St. Marys, Fontbonne, & Norwell), forcing 5 sets in each of the matches.

Captain Mae McDermott had to say of the team, “Every day we are improving and you can really see how strong of a team we are going to become. Our mindset is what pushes us forward. The future is looking bright for us and wins will continue to come for us!” The Lady Bishops ended the week last week with their first win of the season beating South Shore Christian Academy, 3-0, and will look to build off of that with matches against Bishop Fenwick and Matignon this week. Good luck girls!

Golf

The golf team came into this season looking forward to a fantastic year. There was a bit of concern with the season quickly approaching and no coach. All concerns were ended however, when the Bishops hired a new coach, Pam Kiley, an AWHS alum (class of ’81). Kiley has come in and brought a refreshing passion to compete. Senior Captain Jack Cesarz says, “We are very optimistic going into this season. Even after losing 3 majors factors from last year’s team, we are confident that with Coach Kiley coming in, and a lot of new young talent, this is going to be a good year.”

Despite a tough start to the season, with their only win coming against CCL rival Cardinal Spellman, they are confident more wins will come. Senior Captain Riley Salani says, “As a team we all have to learn that we aren’t playing the person we’re playing ourselves. Our success will depend less on the strength of our body and more upon the strength of our mind and character.” With this outlook on the season, a bright future is ahead!

Cross Country

The boys and girls Cross Country teams have had a pretty solid start to the 2018 season. The girls find themselves one game over .500 at 2-1, while the boys find themselves one game under .500 at 1-2, despite battling some key injuries early in the year. They have been working hard at practice to get better times and they are hoping it shows in the future. Senior Brendan Kelly says, "Overall, we have a pretty solid team this year. Both squads have some pretty big invitationals planned for this year which we are confident that we will do well in. I definitely expect to see some big moves out of the bills this year, go cross country!”

Despite being young and despite both sides battling the injury bug early on, both the boys and girls fared well at Bishop Fenwick last week (both teams beat Pope John Paul, and girls also beat St. Joe’s Prep), after a tough loss to CCL competitor, Bishop Fenwick to start the season. If they can get healthy soon, the Bishops are confident they will be able to speed past many of the CCL teams. Continue the good work we know all of you will do great!

Tennis advances to MIAA D3 State Semi-finals

2018 Tennis

What a season this has been for our tennis team. Last year after a first-round win over St. John Paul the girls lost to the eventual state champ Martha's Vineyard. They did not let the loss get them down and came back this year ready to advance even farther.

This year the #5 Bishops will host #9 Cohasset on Monday at 4 PM (Presidents Club in Quincy) in the MIAA State Tournament D3 Semi-finals. This has been a fantastic season for the team with a regular season record of 13-5 and two tournament wins over #3 St. John Paul and #4 Rockland, which is the farthest the team has advanced since the divisional realignments nearly a decade ago.

We hope you can make it out to the match on Monday. Good Luck to the team!

AWHS Athletics -- Spring Blog

AWHS Spring Sports Blog

Boys Lacrosse

What a difference a year can make. Last season, the boys’ lacrosse program had a frustrating season, where they were only able to win 5 games. Fast forward to the 2018 season, and after 14 games, the Bishops have already doubled their win total from last year, sitting at a 10-5 record with 3 games remaining in the regular season. The win total has qualified them for a tournament berth, which is an amazing feat after only winning five games last year. Coach Marks and Coach Curley have done a fantastic job with this group, sweeping three different CCL foes (Spellman, St. Mary’s, and Arlington Catholic). It is still a big question mark just where the Bishops will fall as far as seeding is concerned in the tournament, but stealing a win or two in their last three games will certainly help.

The Bishops have accounted for 143 goals scored in 15 games, a large portion of them coming from a four-headed group in Barry, Glass, Vaughan, and Bosse. Their slow-paced offense tries to lull opponents to sleep defensively, but if the Bishops want to get past the first round of the tournament, these four must continue be efficient shooting the ball. Defensively, the veteran long-poles continue to play well and arguably the biggest surprise of the sports season has come from senior goalie, Mattheau Gaudet who has played extremely well in net.

Girls Lacrosse

The girls’ varsity program once again has had an outstanding start to their regular season. The Lady Bishops sit at a 13-3 record with two games remaining against Hull and Rockland. The 13 wins will clinch at least one home tournament game for the girls. One of the major question marks going into the season was how in the world were they going to replace two of the top goal scorers in the history of the program. After 16 games, the Lady Bishops have scored 201 total goals, good for 12.6 goals-per-game. Despite losing junior Haley Reed to injury in the early part of the season, their offense has stepped up thanks to three underclassmen, who have accounted for a total 119 goals. Haley Mullen (48), Mel McClay (41), and Kayleen Sickorez (30) have been fantastic, while senior leaders Allison Delmonte and Kim Dunn continue to be as consistent as ever in all aspects of the game.

Nicole Hersey has accounted for all 13 wins in net, while only giving up a little over 7 goals a game. However, in the last five games, Hersey has only given up a total of 24 goals… good for under a 5 goal-per-game average. The Lady Bishops will look to finish the regular season strong and make a strong push in the tournament.

Shout out to Coach Aisner who has the JV Girls Lacrosse team at a remarkable 10-0 record!

Baseball

After a tough loss to Middleboro in their last game, the Varsity Boys Baseball team sits at an 8-6 record, with six games remaining in the season. The Bishops, like any other baseball team in MA, have had to battle Mother Nature and the rain which has extended their regular season into the first week in June. However, weather has not stopped them from racking up 8 wins already, including strong wins against Sharon, Arlington Catholic, and two against Norwell HS. One of the factors in the 8 wins has been hitting… as evident to them driving in 85 runs, good for over 10 runs per game. In their 6 losses, the Bishops have only managed to drive in 9 runs. If the Bishops want to make a run like they did last year, the bats are going to have to get hot at the right time.

Due to early season injuries to the two top starters in the rotation, the Bishops have had to rely on senior Sam Hamer’s arm, as well as the arms, of three underclassmen (Brandon Sullivan, Jack Cesarz, and Kyle Rowell) who have all pitched pretty well throughout the season. If they can get senior Jared Marini and sophomore Myles McDermott to full strength by tournament time, the Bishops could very well be due for another deep tournament run.

Shout out to Coach Berman who has the JV program at a 9-1 record through their first ten games!

Softball

The softball program has had a tough season record-wise, starting the year 3-10 in the first 13 games. With 7 games remaining, the Lady Bishops hope they can make a late season push to improve their record and get them closer to .500 on the season. Losing a star pitcher is never easy to recover from, and the girls’ have definitely had their struggles on the mound. The one positive is that two of their three main pitchers are very young (Kerry Shaughnessy – 8th grade, Shelby Parr – 7th grade) and their futures are both very bright.

The Lady Bishops do have the veteran leadership to make a nice late season run to improve their record, plus a sophomore star in the heart of their lineup. Senior Alissa Sayers had this to say about the 2018 season; “The start to the year has been a bit on the rough side, but we are a resilient group that aren’t going to go down without a fight. We want to end the season and for most of us, our careers, on a very positive note.”

The Lady Bishops host St. Mary’s and travel to Braintree HS this upcoming week and will look to get back on the winning side of things.

Tennis

It has been another outstanding regular season for the Girls Tennis program here at AWHS. Through 15 matches, the Lady Bishops find themselves at 12-3 on the season, with 3 matches remaining in their season. Outside of their 2 losses against a very strong CCL foe in Austin Prep, the Lady Bishops finished their regular season undefeated against CCL competition, sweeping Arlington Catholic, Fenwick, Spellman, and St. Mary’s. The Alessi twins and senior Daisy Zhang have been fantastic in singles play while Sallyrose Savage & Eleni Kroumpouzos and Nicky Vo & Viola Xu have formed great duos in doubles play. The girls finish the regular season with a pro-set against Boston Latin, followed by O’Bryant to finish the season. After getting knocked out by the Vineyard in last year’s tournament, the Lady Bishops will look to make a strong push deep into this year’s tournament.

Spring Track & Field

The boys and girls Spring Track & Field teams both sit at a remarkable 7-2 record this season, as it seems like every week there are personal and/or school records being broken. The Boys’ Track & Field team have had very quality wins over Spellman, St. Mary’s, and Austin Prep, while the Girls’ Track & Field Team have had very quality wins over Arlington Catholic, St. Mary’s, and Austin Prep. These wins prepared the team for the CCL Championship Meet.

On Sunday, the two teams and their qualifiers, met at Bishop Fenwick HS for the CCL Championship Meet. The Girls’ Track & Field managed to finish in 2nd place, while the Boys’ finished 3rd. During the meet, there were a bunch of highlights, including Junior Erica MacSweeney who ended up winning MVP at the meet after scoring 26 total points. Marc-Andy Mexil broke the school record in the 400 Meter Hurdles, Ashley Tran & Erica MacSweeney both qualified for next week’s State Class Meet, and 5 members of the two teams qualified as CCL All-Stars after their performances at the event.

Coach Van Dorpe continues to do a great job with this large group of male and female student-athletes. “Sometimes it isn’t easy coaching 90-plus kids with only two coaches, but our veteran athletes have done a great job helping and working with our younger athletes. We’ve been lucky enough to have had some major contributions throughout the season from a lot of our younger track & field stars too. It has been an extremely fun and entertaining spring.”

"A Winter Full of Memories"

By: Seniors Liam Barnicle & Abby McCulloch

Girls Hockey

What a year it was for the Girl's Hockey program. The Lady Bishops finished the season with their best record in the history of the program at 16-5-2. The team stormed through the regular season, recording 9 games where they held their opponent scoreless... large in part to the great play in net from junior Allison Delmonte and the strong defense. On the the opposite side of the ice, the Lady Bishops were led by a three headed monster offensively with Hannah Bell, Mackenzie Heath, and Chelsea Taxter who combined to score an unbelievable 51 goals on the season. The strong regular season play led to the Lady Bishops landing a #3 seed in the Division 2 Girls Hockey MIAA Tournament.

Excitement was brewing throughout the girls hockey program as they entered the tournament with a certain buzz they had never felt before. They drew a second round match up against a very good King Philip team (Had a bye round 1). Behind a loud and cheerful crowd, the Bishops struck early and often jumping out to a lead to start the game. K.P. battled back and made it a one goal game late in the 3rd period, but Delmonte did what she had done all year long and closed the door in net, despite KP putting a lot of pressure late. The Lady Bishops held on 3-2 and saw a date with Natick in the Quarterfinals. In the next round, the Lady Bishops again weathered the storm in Woburn to defeat Natick, 2-0.

Next up.. State Semi-finals match up with #2 seeded Canton at the Warrior Arena. Winner heading to the Garden. After a scoreless first period, Canton snuck one in the back of the net to make it a 1-0 game. The Lady Bishops pushed and pushed, but struggled to find many opportunities offensively. The third period came and behind a large and loud crowd of Bishops fans, the girls started picking up some momentum. However, that momentum was halted by the goal keeper of Canton who shut the door on the Lady Bishops... game ended 1-0. While disappointment set in and a trip to the TD Garden was held short, the Lady Bishops had a season to remember!

(Pictured below: The Girls Hockey team receive the MIAA James F. Mulloy Sportsman award at the TD Garden)

Boys Hockey

The Boys Hockey program had another tough finish to their season, missing the tournament by one point. Similar to last season, the Bishops had to deliver significant results in the Buddy Ferreira tournament down in Falmouth. The tournament, featuring many of the top teams in the state, proved to be just a little too much for the boys hockey program as they came up just short once again after losing to a Super-8 contender, Hingham High School.

Despite another tough finish to the season, the Bishops could look back on many positives that came from this past winter season. First and foremost, the Boy's Hockey team got a plethora of contributions from young players which does mean their future is still bright. They will lose some very good seniors, but will also return a majority of their team who will all be a year improved. The Bishops landed many outstanding wins throughout the season, including a 9-4 victory over Matignon. Their biggest win of the season may have came against CCL competitor, St. Mary's, who ended up making it to the Super 8.

The difference of the season may have came from their 6 ties on the year. If those ties could have gone on the positive side, the Bishops would have landed a spot in the tournament. However, it certainly doesn't take away from the season that the boys hockey program had put together. As senior Brendan Foley stated, "I've had the time of my life playing for this school and the fans of AWHS. When you walk out that door, it's forever... you can never get that back." It's quotes like that, that define a program and we look forward to the Boys Hockey team contending again next season.

(Pictured below: Senior Nick Glass fires one past the goalie of King Philip during the 2017-2018 season.

Swimming

It was another fantastic season for the swim team here at AWHS. The Bishops finished with a 7-2 record on the season, which is their second straight season with at least 7 wins. Throughout the season, the Bishops found themselves breaking many school records and competing at a very high level. Every meet they seemed to get better and better which brought us to a "cliffhanger" type of performance at the CCL's. The Bishops struck gold in three different races during the CCL's, but the effort placed the swimmers in 3rd place for a second straight season, but just 2 total points behind the 2nd place finisher.

Before this year, the Bishops had never won an event in the competition. However, this year was different. Nicole Miller '21 cruised to victory, winning gold in the 100 Butterfly. Sam Rossini '21 struck gold in the 100 Freestyle, beating out 17 other swimmers and knocking off the school record in the process. The 200 Relay team of Nicole Miller, Liz Galicki '21, Teddy Rossini '20, and Sam Rossini also clinched gold in the competition. Many other school records were broken throughout the event, which goes to show the work and effort the swimmers put into this season.

6 different swimmers were invited to the MIAA South Sectionals at MIT, which shattered the number of invitations we had last season. Liz Galicki shined, finishing 14th overall in the 100 backstroke, which is an incredible feat given the fact that she is only a Freshman. It was an overall record-breaking season for the Bishops, who will return a ton of young talent next season.

(Pictured below: The Bishops prepare for a mid-season meet against Bishop Connolly. The Bishops swam to victory 94-71.)

Winter Cheerleading

The cheerleaders had another very successful winter season behind the leadership of coaches Ali Fareri and Al Grasso. The girls' practiced on a weekly basis, perfecting many routines ad could often be seen at many home basketball games, flipping their way through timeouts. The girls' had a long layover until the CCL competition, but remained confident that their effort in practice was going to carry over the the performance... and they were right.

The girls' finished 2nd at the CCL's with an outstanding routine. This qualified them again for Regionals. Despite limited gym time and space, Cheer had another outstanding season, which featured a lot of newcomers and young talent.

Senior, Julia Galvin, had this to say about the season: "Overall, I think this season was a success. Our main goal was to bring back the greatness of this program, and I think we took a great step in doing so. We worked hard all season long and got stronger each week. I am confident in the younger girls to keep it going for the next couple of years!"

(Pictured below: The Cheerleaders huddle up before their routine at the CCL's. The girls' finished 2nd)

Track & Field

What a winter season for the Track team here at AWHS! Both the Boys & Girls' track teams finished above .500 with a 4-3 record, but some can argue that the overall records don't do justice for just how successful this season was for the Bishops. Similar to the Swim team... many personal bests were achieved. Many school records were broken. A large number of members placed at the TCL Championship Meet. We had runners invited to the State Class Meet. We would be here all day if we counted the number of track and field athletes that contributed somehow to the success of the season. This is a testament of how hard the student-athletes worked all season, despite having to battle the weather on a daily basis.

While it would be tough to highlight every athlete who achieved a personal best (Check GOBishops as Coach Van Dorpe has highlighted a bunch of them), we did want to highlight some of the school records that were broken. In the final meet of the season, Senior Chigozie Sumani broke a school record, which was previously set by herself earlier in the season, in the 55 meter hurdles, where she finished 4th in the State Class Meet. In the same meet, both the boys & girls' 4 x 200 relays broke school records! The team of William Hua, Jared Kennedy, Sean McA'Nulty, and Vijay Blair finished in 1:38.28 and the team of Anna Romaine, Kristen Burke, Ashley Tran, and Chigozie Sumani finished in 1:54.71.

While it wasn't a school record, we must also give a shout-out to Julia McRoberts who finished with her 2nd straight undefeated season in the Shot Put, as well as, her 6th invitation to the State Class Meet (out of 7 seasons!). A big thanks has to be given to Coach Van Dorpe who once again put together another outstanding season.

(Pictured below: The seniors, with their posters, at the Reggie Lewis Center on Senior Day)

Boys Basketball

It was another tough season for the Boys Basketball team here at AWHS, as the Bishops finished with just 3 wins on the season. However, similar to last season which only managed 4 wins, there were many positives that came out of this season. The first positive that must be highlighted occurred before the season even got a start. The participation numbers were at an all-time high during tryouts, which is a testament of the job that Coach Dolan, Coach Bloomer, and Coach Curley are doing with the program. The second positive that came out of this season was how the Bishops battled in a lot of games this season. They took three tournament bound teams (Canton, Scituate, and Abington) to the final seconds in games that could have gone either way. Finally, the Bishops stayed motivated throughout tough times. As senior David Liddell said, "Although it was a tough season, it was very enjoyable. My teammates and the coaching staff gave me many memories that I will never forget."

So what's next for the Boys Basketball program? Despite only having 7 wins the past two seasons, the future remains very bright for the Bishops. The JV and Freshman teams combined with 13 wins on the season, including wins over Cardinal Spellman, St. Mary's, and Cathedral's sub-varsity teams. Also, we can not forget about the year that the Middle School basketball team had! The very young future of the program happened to win their league's championship, with an outstanding win over Cathedral in the final game. We are very excited to see what is going to come over the next year or two with the boys basketball program.

(Pictured below: The senior basketball players & cheerleaders on what was an amazing Senior night)

Girls Basketball

"Yeah, I'm going back to back!" Drake's rap song titled "Back to Back" could very well become the theme song of the Girl's Basketball program, as the girl's varsity team won another State Championship, defeating Hampshire Regional 77-42 in the final game at Springfield College. While this season, and especially the playoff run, may have seemed like a "breeze" for any outsider, the Lady Bishops put a season and a run together, that will be tough to duplicate. Throughout the season, the Lady Bishops battled injury and life difficulties that really battle-tested the program. At one point of the season, the varsity team had 8 girls dressed, and 5 that were injured, including senior captain Shannon Kelley, who broke her foot that ended her season. However, the girls took the challenge and ran away with it, as it made them closer and stronger. They knocked off Dedham, East Bridgewater, Norwell, Fontbonne, and Bishop Fenwick (3rd time in the season) in their playoff run, before defeating Hampshire.

Similar to last season's postseason run, the Lady Bishops got a significant amount of help from their bench... especially in moments when they needed them most. We could spend hours talking about different moments where a bench player contributed in some way. In the end, the depth and talent deemed to be too much for opponents. Kent State commit, Asiah Dingle, averaged well over 20 points per game in the playoffs. Erica Silvia, who did an sensational job stepping in for Kelley, lead the team by a large margin in charges taken. Jess Knight had a team high 22 points in the biggest game of the season. Monica Spain was all-around magnificent throughout the run. Bridgette O'Reilly hit key shots when they were needed the most. It was just an overall season to remember for the girls and the coaching staff.

Can the program keep their State Championship streak alive? It certainly won't be easy, losing 5 seniors (three who will be playing at the collegiate level), but the team will bring back boatloads of talent. Oh and the JV and Freshman teams combined for 22 wins and only 6 loses. Great season girls!

Results from Mass State Track Championship

Some amazing performances characterized AWHS Winter Track Team's final meet of the season.  Here are the highlights:

Placers
Chigozie Sumani - 4th place in the 55 Meter Hurdles.  Chigozie lowered her school record both in the preliminaries and finals to 9.20.  With the top 3 finishers automatic qualifiers to the All-State Meet, Chigozie still has a chance to qualify for the All-States as an at-large performance.  We will know on Sunday when all the divisional meets are completed.

Julia McRoberts - 6th place (33'11") in the Shot Put with her personal best performance of the season.

School Records
Both the boys (11th place) and girls (16th place) 4 x 200 relays broke the school's records:

Girls (1:54.71) - Anna Romaine, Kristen Burke, Ashley Tran, Chigozie Sumani

Great Job to our track team!

Winter Season in Full Swing

Winter season has reached half-way point and teams are off to a fantastic start. As we approach the second half of the season, every Varsity team in the athletic program, except for one, has a record of .500 or better. The second half of the winter season should be a good one for all the teams. Abby & Liam sat down to take a look at each team!

*REMINDER: SPRING REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! *

SWIMMING:

The swim team continues to knock off teams in their path. After 5 meets, the Bishops find themselves at 4-1 on the season. After finishing the year 7-2 last season, Coach Lally and company find themselves on track to finish with a better record than last season, which was a record-breaking season in many ways. The only loss so far this season came against Bishop Fenwick, but that didn't stop the swimmers from bouncing right back with a huge CCL victory over St. Marys. In the latest victory, the swimmers won all but one event in the meet.

The Rossini brothers continued their dominance on the season, winning every time they dove into the pool against Marys. Junior captain, Kelsey Harrington, got to the winner's circle in the 100 backstroke for the first time in her three year career. The Bishops will look to take on O'Bryant this Friday, at Randolph. Also, the Austin Prep meet has been rescheduled for January 29th!

CHEERLEADING:

This season the cheerleading team will have competitions coming up in February. They’ve won CCL titles in the past and hope to add another one this winter season. A couple of days a week, the girls have been working extremely hard in practices to perfect their routines. They also have been great support at all of the boys' basketball games this winter.  The cheerleaders hope to have support at the competitions in February so we hope everyone comes out and supports the Cheer team!

BOYS BASKETBALL:

The boys basketball team is looking forward to improving their 2-7 record in the second half of the season. Despite having 7 losses, the Bishops have been in a lot of games including a 5 point loss to Canton, 9 point loss to Fenwick, and a 2 point loss to Pembroke. Senior captain Tom Veasey says, "Our team has had a slow start but have improved greatly since the beginning of the season. We’re looking to get a few big road victories to get back on track. We are all so excited for the rest of the season!” The Bishops continue to work hard every day in practice and will need all the help that they can get with Cardinal Spellman coming to town on Friday and a road date next week with St. Marys.

James Dolan, another captain, is part of the captains council here at AWHS. When asked about the new class, Dolan had this to say: “captains council is a great way for all the leaders of each team to collaborate and talk about things we need to work on as a school and things we are doing well. Captains council allows us to listen to ideas of other students to help better our own teams.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL:

Girls basketball is off to another strong start in the first half of the season. Coming off a State Title is never easy, but the Lady Bishops find themselves at 9-1 in their first ten games. That is good enough to land them a top-5 ranking in the state of Massachusetts. Their only loss on the year came on the road in overtime against a very good Cathedral team. They avenged that loss this past weekend in New York against Kennedy Catholic, out of PA. “Girls Basketball has been having a great season so far and we are looking forward to improving after our loss to Cathedral. We are very excited for the rest of the season to come!” says senior captain Shannon Kelly. The girls are looking forward to another big game on the road against Spellman.

Along with showing leadership on the court, our winter captains participate in a captains council. Shannon Kelly says “Captains council is a good way to gather all the captains together to address how are teams are working and how we can each become better leaders by learning from one another.”

BOYS HOCKEY:

The boys hockey team hopes to improved their record, which now stands at 3-3-5, as the season approaches the half way point. The Bishops still have their eyes set on their pre-season goal of making the playoffs. That goal became a whole lot more realistic after key wins against King Philip and St. Marys. The second half of the year is going to be huge for the Bishops on the ice. Their 5 ties could make-or-break if they can get into the playoffs and will need to turn those ties into wins in the second half of the Winter.

When asked on his thoughts of the season so far, Senior Captain Brendan Foley said "After a slow start I think the boys are ready to turn it around. Everyone's starting to gel together at the right time with a couple big games coming up. We'll always be the hardest working team in the building win or lose.” The Bishops will travel to Bishop Fenwick this Saturday night in a big CCL showdown.

GIRLS HOCKEY:

The 7-2 girls hockey team is off to a very promising start in the first half of the season. The girls are still chasing the required points to qualify for some post season play, and if they keep up this success, there will be no doubt they will not only see a playoff birth, but also a very high seed. Coming off a big wins against Arlington Catholic,Whitman Hanson, Mount St. Charles, and Weymouth, the Lady Bishops will hope to clinch the tournament soon.

When asked about the season Senior Captain Hannah Bell said “We’ve had a few tough losses after battling Austin Prep and Dennis Yarmouth. We are improving each day, we seem to be back on track and itching to get a spot in the tournament. Its important to keep our spirits up and keep our focus on working hard every day.” The Lady Bishops will host Stoneham tomorrow night at the Zap. Get out and root on the girls as they look for win #8.

WINTER TRACK:

Winter track got back over .500 last night with a convincing win over Marian/Matignon, 94-33. That puts both the boys and girls 3-2 on the season. In the meet, the Bishops took 1st place in 13-out-of-16 events, including very strong performances in both the 4 x 400 and 4 x 200 relays. The team continues to achieve personal bests each event, and continues to compete at a very high level in both boys and girls events. Coach Van Dorpe had this to say after the Lowell Catholic meet, in which he saw his team dominate early and often; "It was great to see just how focused everyone was from start to finish. It certainly hasn't been easy to prepare for these meets because of the weather we face each day during the winter season, but I am very proud of both our male and female student-athletes who have done an outstanding job staying motivated. We are looking forward to a strong end of the season."

Feel free to go by GOBishops and check out the list of every one who is achieving personal bests on a weekly basis! Great work guys and girls!
