2019-20 Winter Tryout Information

Welcome to the 2019-20 Winter Sports Season
Tryouts Information

Winter sports are just about around the corner. We have so many exciting things going on. Our gym is completely renovated and ready to host some basketball! Our girl's hockey program is moving over to The Canton Sportsplex were they will have their own locker room. Our tryout numbers are strong and we are looking forward to everything starting on December 2nd!

Here is some information that will help you out for tryouts. Everything will be posted on www.gobishops.com as well.

A couple of logistical items;

Please make sure you are registered on FamilyID.com (www.gobishops.com has a link). After registration the nurse and trainer will ensure you have a current physical, ImPACT (concussion test) completed, and that you have no outstanding injuries. The athletic department will verify that all your past uniforms are in and that you are in good standing with grades and the school. After that is completed the term "Approved" will be put into your registration (which you can check on Family ID). That is the way you determine if you are "Cleared"  or "Approved" to participate.

~To check your student-athletes Approval status;

1. Go to Family ID
2. Dashboard - Click Blue button - "View or update registration"
3. Find current sport registration
4. Click Summary (Button is on the right of the registration link)

The status is at the bottom under "memo from AWHS"

***If you are not approved, there will be an approval status note, which will tell you what the student-athlete needs in order to be cleared for try-outs.

If there are any questions please contact Stephanie our Athletic trainer at sadukonis@awhs.org.

Fall Blog - Interns - Season update

Archbishop Williams Fall Blog

From the Athletics Department: Meet our Interns and Major Team Update

Our Athletic Department offers a graded Internship elective. It is a competitive process to be accepted into this course. They are responsible for maintaining our website and updating our blog. They do scheduling, film work (Bishops TV reporting), Hudl (game film and statistics), and game administration. They are a key part of operating our athletics program.

This year, seniors Meg Marcel and Grace Cuddy were chosen for the course and have been doing a great job! They have composed the following brief introduction of themselves and written a round-up of the Fall Sports season to date.

Meg Marcel, I am the Senior Class Vice President. I have played Basketball and Softball all four years here. I am committed to Bryant University to play Division 1 Softball at the beautiful Conaty Park. I will major in Business and minor in Sports Management. Fun fact, I just got a brand new puppy named Memphis and he is just the cutest.

Grace Cuddy, I have played soccer and basketball all four years here. I am applying early decision to Providence College in Rhode Island. I plan on majoring in Biology and Forensic Psychology so I can be a Forensic Nurse in the FBI. A fun fact about me is I’m a hermit crab whisperer.

Girls Soccer - This season the girls are facing some tough opponents. As they go over the halfway point of the season the girls are 7-5-0. All of their losses have been by one goal, but as the second half comes around the girls look to beat the teams this time around. This year's seniors who are also captains are confident that they can get back to the playoffs. Senior captains Puyenni Sumani and Meg Cormican made a comment saying “The team is doing well even while facing some adversities. We are working hard together to make our season a good one and to make the tournament. The rest of the season will be filled with hard work and fun!” The team is very young but is showing bright promise for the future as they look to kick things into gear for the second half of the season.

Boys Soccer - The Boys started off slow, but as we reach the halfway point in the season they are turning up the heat and are on a four-game winning streak with a record of 8-5-0! After graduating six seniors last year, captains CoCo Dolan and Lucien Polizio had big shoes to fill as the only seniors. Coco made a comment about the first half thus far saying “this season has had many highs and lows. We have hit the lowest points our program has ever been through, but we have worked so hard as a team that we think we can do some amazing things. We have to keep grinding day in and day out.” The team has been coming together as a whole and are looking good as the season continues. They are confident that they will make it further into the playoffs than this past year.

Cross Country - The Cross Country team is off to a terrific start this fall season. They are 3-3 but senior captain Teddy Rossini says “We have been doing very well in our invitational meets and we have some of the fastest runners we have ever had.” The team is working hard for the upcoming CCL league meet on October 29th and States on November 2nd and 9th.

Cheer - The Cheer team has been looking good during their halftime performances during the Football games. Every day they work hard on their routines. The team has a competition coming up on October 19th at Braintree High, followed by the CCL on November 9th at Austin Prep. Captain Colleen Goulart says “We have a lot of new girls and more advanced skills. There are girls from all grades on the team and we are like a family. We are definitely going to do well and hopefully make it to states and nationals.” With four strong senior captains, the girls are confident that they will make it far into the season.

Football - The Football team is looking great this fall season. The boys had a huge win at the Homecoming game vs the Pembroke Titans and a great recent win over AC. Their record is 3-2, but senior Matt Herrick and Neil Sanders both felt that “There is a lot of football left to play. There is always room for improvement but week by week we’re getting better.” The team needs to pull off one more win to make the playoffs, and they are very confident they can do it.

Golf - Golf is off to a strong start as we pass the halfway point in the fall season! The team is 10-4, which has qualified them for the State Tournament. The team is led by captain Brendan Donovan. After a tough loss in the state finals last year, the team has been looking sharp and is very confident that they will make another appearance in the state finals. Senior Alex Pelagio made a comment about the season saying “everyone has been consistent and I think we can win it all this year.” The upperclassmen have been making the younger kids feel like they belong, as they carry on into the home stretch of the season.

Volleyball - As the first half of the season comes to an end the girls are 9-5. New Head Coach Ben Leong, has put the Lady Bishops back to a winning record after a few tough years of not making the tournament. The seniors help carry the squad with two 6-foot players (Jess Knight and Ang Clifford) in the front row as Maisy McDermott and Caroline Marcotte compliment them in the back. The future is looking very bright for the Bishops. Captain Maisy McDermott says “we are doing really well we have already beat last year's record. With our seven seniors and four returning starters the team is looking stronger than ever.” They are extremely confident about making the playoffs for the first time in two years and we all are looking forward to seeing what they will do!

AWHS hire new Girls Hockey Coach

PRESS RELEASE Archbishop Williams hires a familiar face for its Girls Hockey position-- Ben Leong will take the helm this winter after our long-time coach Mark McHale's retirement. Coach Leong has served as the top Assistant for the program for the past two years and brings a wealth of hockey knowledge and coaching experience. He is also the school’s volleyball coach, leading the Bishops toward a tournament berth this fall and is an assistant track and field coach.

AWHS Athletic Director Gordie McClay stated, "I am thrilled to have Coach Leong as our girl's hockey coach. He is doing a tremendous job with our volleyball team and knows he will bring that same passion to this position."

President Dennis Duggan added, "I'm very pleased that Ben has accepted the appointment to be our next Girls Varsity Hockey Coach.  He has played a key role in our Program over the last two years as an assistant to retiring Head Coach Mark McHale, especially in his work with our goalies.  He has proven himself to be a strong leader and motivator in a quiet, understated manner. Ben is the perfect choice to continue and build on the legacy of success Coach McHale established over the last 14 years.”

Coach Leong came to AWHS having served as the assistant girl's hockey coach at Notre Dame Acadamy. He knows he has some big shoes to fill with the retirement of McHale, a member of the Massachusetts State High School Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame. He is up for the challenge, stating, “I am honored, humbled and excited to accept the position as the Head Coach for the Girls Ice Hockey program and look forward to making another successful season. Thank you for the opportunity to serve the Archbishop Williams High School community. I look forward to making a positive impact and experience for all the student-athletes and other students alike.

Principal Dr. Michael Volonnino summed up the school’s position on this promotion, "Coach Leong has been a strong contributor to our athletic program and a role model for our student-athletes. I am proud to welcome him to this new role.”

Archbishop Williams, a Grades 7-12, Catholic, co-educational school in Braintree, plays in the Catholic Central League

AWHS 2019 Fall Sports Blog #1

Welcome to the Fall 2019 Season

The hard work over the offseason, tryouts, and practices to prepare for opening games are paying off! We started our first week of games with wins in Volleyball, Golf, Girls Soccer and Football. A great way to get things going!

Golf had a phenomenal Catholic Central League win over Arlington Catholic on Thursday, 158-157.
Lead by Jake LaMonica with 36, Brendan Donovan with 31, and Alex Pelagio with 22.  Will Cunniff and Andrew Marcotte provided a big help with their 20 and 19 points. Overall a great win for the team!

Volleyball started a new era with a new head coach, Coach Ben Leong in a big way beating Matignon 3-0. The Bishops won their opener at home, 25-19, 25-14, 25-14, behind strong play from sisters Ashley and Caroline Marcotte. Also starring for Williams: Mae McDermott, Jessica Gustafson, and Jessica Knight. Freshman Volleyball won both matches on Saturday over Matignon and St. Marys.

Girls Soccer beat Cathedral/Cristo Rey 12-0. There were nine different scorers with Kellianne Caldwell, Catherine Weaver, Mel McClay and Gianna Giannandrea scoring their first varsity goals. Overall a great way to start the season!

Football beat Quincy on Friday night 28-0. The team played well with Senior Nick Tardanico ran for three touchdowns and 192 yards on 19 carries to lead the Bishops. A great team win and a great way to start the season!

Cheer did a great job at the game on Friday and continues to prepare for upcoming competitions.

Cross Country continues to prepare for their first meet.

A big week coming up with a full schedule of sports coming up. Please check www.gobishops.com for more info.

Some things to keep in mind:

AWHS Gym - Please use the gym entrance which is to the left of the main entrance. Parking is available across the street from the school in the visitor's lot. Also, there is no food or drinks (other than water) allowed in the gym. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our new gym clean.

Parking and drop off - Students parking is in the APL (Archies Parking Lot) in the back of the school. Visitor parking is across the street from the main entrance of the school. Please do not park in the fire lanes (even to drop off or pick up). Our team buses need access as they enter the school and we must keep the lane open for emergencies.

Lockerrooms - Student-Athletes must lock their lockers and do not have access to them until 7:55 AM before school. Please plan accordingly. No one can be in the locker room or surrounding areas unsupervised. Also, a reminder that there is no food or drink (except water) allowed in the locker room or The Dig.

The Dig (Workout facility) - Will be open after school at 2:30 for use. There will be a time slot for open workouts 2:30-3:30 and then teams assigned at 3:30 and 4:15. You must register and be cleared to use The Dig through Family ID. More information will be out this week on the use of The Dig.

Our interns; Grace Cuddy '20 and Meg Marcel '20 will be working on the AWHS Blog going forward and look for weekly updates!

Thanks again for all your efforts to start the season. If you have any questions please let us know:

Best Regards,

Coach McClay
