Good Evening,

We will begin our winter sports season tomorrow, Monday the 30th of November for the MIAA approved winter sports: boys and girls basketball, boys and girls hockey, and CO-ED Swimming. We will be using the out-of-season contact rule that was "suspended" for this school year. This plan is within the rules, safe (following all protocols), and a great thing for our student-athletes.

We will follow all Massachusetts EEA guidelines, MIAA modifications and rules, and School policy as we move forward.  The administration, coaches, and athletic department have been working on the winter sports season for months. We worked out practice plans, the league and non-league schedule,  and formulated a great plan.

The details for each sport and check-in procedures are on gobishops.com on each sports page. We have also listed the groups for the first day. Anyone who registered late (after the November 20th) is not eligible for Monday and will be assigned to the next session day. We will assign the next session time after Monday's time slot. We are limited to 25 players on any playing surface and we will have to ensure we fit those guidelines before making assignments.

Please know as we move forward, the key to our success will be following all policies and procedures and communication. We will all have to work together on and off the court, pool, and rinks.

Our goal is to get our student-athletes playing the approved winter sports safely. We are excited about the season and this great opportunity. Please let me know if you have any questions.

From the Athletics Department: Meet our Interns and sports program updates

Fall “One” season blog #4 - 16 October 2020

Our Athletic Department offers a graded Internship elective. It is a competitive process to be accepted into this course. They are responsible for maintaining our website and updating our blog. They do scheduling, film work, Hudl (game film and statistics), and game administration. They are a key part of operating our athletics program.

This year, seniors Kat Greenwood and Mel McClay were chosen for the course and have been doing a great job! They have composed the following brief introduction of themselves and written a Bi-Weekly round-up of the Fall Sports season.

Kat Greenwood, I have played volleyball and basketball all four years here. I plan on majoring in anatomy and physiology. One of my favorite things about Archies is the friendship created on and off the court.

Mel McClay, I have played hockey, lacrosse, and soccer all six years here. I am a peer minister this year, and also in the Spanish club. I am looking to go to college to become an Early Childhood Education teacher. I love going to White Horse Beach and spending time with my nephews!

Volleyball-  Volleyball is off to a rough start playing some of their hardest competition in the first few weeks of the season. With a loss, last week to St Mary’s and Bishop Feehan the lady bishops look to turn their season around with a win against Fontbonne Academy Monday.

Cross Country-  Cross country had their first meet of the season Saturday, October 4th against Bishop Feehan. Unfortunately, they lost a tough one to a very strong opponent. Senior Davi Soloman says “We had our first meet we didn’t do as well as we wanted to but we can only get better from here and I’m excited to see where it goes.” Cross country runs there next meet Saturday, October 10th against Arlington Catholic at Bishop Fenwick

Golf-  Golf is 1-4 this season. With a big win over Bishop Fenwick, the team looks to use this momentum in their upcoming match against Bishop Feehan at Braintree Municipal Golf Course at 3pm Saturday, October 17th. Senior Chris Kenney says “ we had a big win against Bishop Fenwick and I think that is going to help us to do well in our other matches coming up. We needed that win to get us excited for the season!”

Boys Soccer- The boy's soccer team is looking forward to playing at home this Saturday, October 17th at 12:00pm against St. Josephs. With a nice 2-1 win over St. Marys and a hard-fought battle against Bishop Feehan to put the Varsity team at 3-1-0. The Jv boys are doing well with a solid 2-1-0 schedule.

Girls Soccer- The girl's soccer team has had a competitive schedule. The varsity girls record is 1-1-1 after a nice 7-0 win over St. Mary’s and a tough loss against Bishop Feehan. In celebration of the seniors, this season the girls will play St. Joseph’s for their senior day this Saturday, October 17th at 2:00pm at Memorial Field (Home).

Spring 2020
Some thoughts from our Spring Sports teams as they continue to get ready for the season. By Meg Marcel ‘20 and Grace Cuddy ‘20 Softball: “ I think the only thing we can do right now is to be patient and stay positive during these tough times. I know all the girls including myself, are ready to start the season and get into the swing of things. We are all using this time to better our own skills and fundamentals, so when the time does come when we can finally get out there, we can put it all together as a team and have fun” said senior Meg Marcel. The girls are getting ready for May 4th to roll around. They are looking forward to making improvements upon last season and to work hard while having fun. Girls Lax: “I think that with the conditions and our situation the lacrosse team is trying to stay positive and keep working. We have been doing stick work and workouts to stay active. It’s difficult to adjust but we all have to make it work. As a team, we even did a Zoom call to get everyone involved. Although this is not the ideal situation I think we are trying to make the best of it and prepare for the upcoming season. It’s short but it’s something and we are very grateful for that. I know I’m also happy we have an extension on the season” says junior Mel Mcclay. The girls have been working very hard to come out as strong as possible on May 4th. Boys lax: “ We are trying to stay active and healthy, keep the sticks in our hands and keep getting better every day. The team is doing a good job of self quarantining and staying at home. Everyone is staying healthy and is getting ready to go” says senior Nolan Bosse. The boys are looking to improve their record from last year and to really find their identity as a team. They are all excited for May 4th to come soon and to get out on the turf. Baseball: “We have a group chat we are always texting in with all the coaches and we have group FaceTimes to stay connected we are actually having a zoom today with the whole program we are also doing a bunch of different challenges on Twitter and then from a baseball standpoint everyone is hitting or throwing to get better for when the season resumes,” said senior Connor Dolan. The boys are eager to get back on the field and we can’t wait to see what they bring to the table this year. Tennis: “Since most courts are closed and we are keeping our distance by self-isolating, our team has been working hard to stay in shape and practice at home. We are continuing to prepare and look forward to the upcoming season!” said Senior Eleni Kroumpouzos. The team is super excited for the courts to open back up on May 4th and to bond with their new coach! We are all excited to see what they bring to the courts this year! Track and Field: “In preparation for this delayed track season, my teammates and I have been training on our own in safe places,” says senior Teddy Rossini. Our track team is looking forward to a successful season this year. Keep up the great work guys!

2020 Spring Season Updates for AWHS

Spring Season Updates
17 March 2020

Good Morning!

We wanted to get some info out to you about the upcoming spring season and answer some of the questions you may have.

Here is one of my favorite quotes by Jon Gordon:

Fear and faith have one thing in common- they both believe in a future that hasn’t happened. Fear believes in a negative future. Faith believes in a positive future. If neither has happened yet why don’t we choose to believe in a positive future?

I believe in a positive future. Here is what we know about the spring season; The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) has stayed on top of the situation and made proactive decisions in this trying time and fluid situation. They heeded the advice of our State and Federal leaders, listened to the membership (our school is a member of the MIAA) and made some difficult but necessary decisions.

We are scheduled to begin the season on Monday the 27th of April and end on June 20th. I know this seems like its a long time away, but it is for all the right reasons. The MIAA is meeting again this week to determine what the season will look like; Number of games we can play, when games can start (how many practices we will need to have before the first official game), what the tournament will look like and all of the items associated with a "shortened" season..etc.

What can we do?

Follow the guidelines "Coronavirus Guidelines"
Encourage our students to complete the schoolwork via our remote learning sessions and treat as if they were in school
If the weather is good, athletes should go outside and practice, there are so many things they can do on your own (after school work is done)
Stay positive and know that we are all in this together

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know and please be safe!

Catholic Central League - Expanding

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 5th, 2020

CCL
Gordie McClay, President
781-843-1237

Catholic Central League (CCL) Expanding for 2020-21

Two south schools added to strengthen further the state’s premier co-ed, Catholic schools conference.

The Catholic Central League (CCL) is excited to announce the addition of two more highly competitive programs for the start of the 2020-21 school year. Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, MA, and Bishop Stang High School in Dartmouth, MA, will be joining the Catholic Central League, further strengthening one of the premier co-ed athletic leagues in the Commonwealth.

The CCL has long been a leader in educational athletics, promoting exemplary sportsmanship, healthy competition, athletic excellence, and scholarly achievement. Comprised of Catholic, co-educational high schools from the North Shore to the South Shore, the CCL is rich in shared values and traditional rivalries.

With the addition of Bishop Feehan and Bishop Stang, the CCL includes 12 schools that excel at the highest level. In the past five years, these schools have combined to win over 20 state championships across a variety of sports. From earning state tournament berths to having graduates excel in all divisions at the college level, the CCL represents the very best in high school sports for young men and women.

In the CCL, each school has its own unique strengths, programs, culture, and emphasis, and all share the same mission to provide the powerfully formative and transformative experience of a co-ed, college prep, Catholic education. From Arlington to Attleboro, from Boston to Braintree, the CCL is stronger with these additions and poised to reach even greater heights in the coming decade.

For most sports, the newly-expanded CCL will be comprised of three divisions: Feehan, Stang, Archbishop Williams High School (Braintree) and Cardinal Spellman High School (Brockton) in the South; Arlington Catholic High School (Arlington), Austin Preparatory School (Reading), Bishop Fenwick High School (Peabody) and St. Mary’s High School (Lynn) in the North; Cathedral High School (Boston), Cristo Rey High School (Boston), Matignon High School (Cambridge) and Saint Joseph Prep High School (Boston) in the Small. League athletic directors are already working on details and logistics for the fall of 2020 and beyond to allow for north-south alignment, large-small scheduling, and an approach to inter-scholastic competition that benefits all of the CCL schools and student-athletes.

Finally, as the power rankings concept comes to the MIAA tournament in nearly all sports, under this configuration winning CCL teams will have the types of resumes to ensure earning the tournament bids and high seeds they deserve.
